Broccoli recall overview:

  • Who: Braga Fresh has recalled bags of broccoli florets.
  • Why: The recall was issued due to the possibility of contamination with Listeria monocytogenes.
  • Where: The broccoli recall is active in Alaska, Arkansas, Arizona, California, Colorado, Idaho, Illinois, Indiana, Kentucky, Louisiana, Michigan, Montana, Nevada, Ohio, Oklahoma, Oregon, Texas, Utah, Washington and Wyoming.

Braga Fresh is recalling one lot of broccoli florets sold in Walmarts in 20 states over concerns they may be contaminated with Listeria monocytogenes.

The recall was published to the U.S. Food & Drug Administration on Dec. 10; It applies to 12-ounce bags of Marketside Broccoli Florets sold at Walmart stores and identifiable with the Universal Product Code (UPC) 6 81131 32884 5, best-by date of Dec. 10, 2024, and Lot Code BFFG327A6.

Listeria monocytogenes is a bacteria that can cause serious and sometimes fatal infections in young children, frail or elderly people, and others with weakened immune systems.

Braga Fresh says it has not received any reports of illness related to the recall so far. The company is not currently facing legal action over the recall, but Top Class Actions follows recalls closely as they sometimes lead to class action lawsuits.

Texas food safety officials raised alarm, recall states

The potential Listeria monocytogenes contamination was discovered during random sampling by Texas Health & Human Services from a Texas store location. Multiple samples of the broccoli yielded a positive test result at the store, the recall says.

The broccoli was distributed to Walmarts in Alaska, Arkansas, Arizona, California, Colorado, Idaho, Illinois, Indiana, Kentucky, Louisiana, Michigan, Montana, Nevada, Ohio, Oklahoma, Oregon, Texas, Utah, Washington and Wyoming.

This product is past its best-by date and is no longer in stores, the recall says, but consumers may have frozen the item for later use. Anyone who has the broccoli in their freezers should not eat it, and should instead throw it away, the recall advises.

This is one of a number of recent vegetable recalls. SunFed Produce issued a cucumber recall in November that led to recalls by Baloian Farms, Russ Davis Wholesale and Fresh Creative Foods, and Grimmway Farms issued a carrot recall in November that led to recalls by 4Earth Farms and F&S Fresh Foods.

I am shocked reading this because I got really sick one night after I ate some Frozen broccoli and cauliflower from Walmart. I threw up 5 times throughout the night. I thought it was some kind of food poisoning.
