Blue Ridge Beef is recalling almost five tons of puppy mix as it may be contaminated with Salmonella.

The recall was published to the U.S. Food & Drug Administration (FDA) website on Dec. 2.

It applies to 9,600 pounds of the company’s 2-pound Puppy Mix with Lot #08/06/N25 and Lot #08/16/N25 and UPC 854298001696.

According to the recall, these lots of Blue Ridge Beef puppy mix are contaminated with Salmonella. The problem was discovered when a customer’s litter of puppies became ill and reported the issue to health authorities, the Blue Ridge Beef recall says.

On Nov. 27, the firm was notified by the FDA that the products tested positive for Salmonella.

“Salmonella can affect animals eating the products and there is risk to humans from handling contaminated pet products,” the recall says.

Pets with Salmonella infections may be lethargic and have diarrhea or bloody diarrhea, fever, and vomiting, the recall says. Some pets will have only decreased appetite, fever, and abdominal pain. Infected but otherwise healthy pets can be carriers and infect other animals or humans.

“If your pet has consumed the recalled product and has these symptoms, please contact your veterinarian,” the recall says. “Consumers who have purchased this product are urged to return to the place of purchase or destroy the food in a way that children, pets, and wildlife cannot access… Wash and sanitize pet food bowls, cups, and storage containers.”

The recalled products were distributed between Aug. 6 and Aug. 23, 2024. They were packaged in clear plastic and sold primarily in retail stores in Connecticut, Maryland, Massachusetts, New York, North Carolina, Pennsylvania and Virginia.

Meanwhile, a New York woman is suing Wellness Pet Company claiming its “natural” pet food labels are deceptive.
