Blue Ridge Beef recall overview:

  • Who: Blue Ridge Beef is recalling 1,350 lbs. of its Kitten Mix logs.
  • Why: One lot of the product is contaminated with Salmonella.
  • Where: The Blue Ridge Beef recall is active in the United States — primarily in Virginia, Maryland, Pennsylvania, Connecticut, Massachusetts and New York.

Blue Ridge Beef is recalling hundreds of bags of its Kitten Mix after discovering that one lot of the product is contaminated with Salmonella.

The recall was published to the U.S. Food & Drug Administration website on Jan. 3. It applies to 1,350 lbs. of Blue Ridge Beef’s 2 lb log Kitten Mix, with lot number N25-0716 and Universal Product Code 8542980013436.

Salmonella can affect animals eating the products and there is risk to humans from handling contaminated pet products, especially if they have not thoroughly washed their hands after having contact with the products or any surfaces exposed to these products, the kitten food recall says.

Recall comes after pet owner reports sick animal

The recall was initiated after a customer complaint that they had a sick animal. A sample of the product was collected in December by Massachusetts health authorities, and tested positive for Salmonella, the notice says.

The company is not currently facing legal action due to the kitten food recall, but Top Class Actions monitors recalls closely as they can sometimes result in a lawsuit.

Pet owners who bought the affected kitten food should stop using it and should return it to where they purchased it, the recall says.

“Do not sell or donate the recalled products. Do not feed the recalled product to pets or any other animals,” it says.

The affected products were distributed between July 18, 2024, and July 26, 2024. The product is packaged in clear plastic and sold primarily in retail stores located in the states of Virginia, Maryland, Pennsylvania, Connecticut, Massachusetts and New York.

This notice comes within weeks of another cat food recall. In December, Northwest Naturals issued a recall for one batch of its name brand two-pound Feline Turkey Recipe raw frozen pet food after it tested positive for the avian flu virus.
