The recall was published on the U.S. Consumers Product Safety Commission website on July 18. It applies to Bissell Steam Shot Handheld Steam Cleaners in the model series 39N7 and 2994.

About 3.2 million of the recalled steam cleaners were sold in the United States, and about 355,000 were sold in Canada.

According to the recall, the Steam Shot can expel hot water or steam onto users while heating or during use, posing a burn hazard.

So far, the company has received 183 reports of hot water or steam escaping from the product, including 157 reports of minor burn injuries. The company is not currently facing legal action. However, Top Class Actions reports on recalls like this because they can sometimes end in class action lawsuits.

Credit or partial refund for affected customers

The recall states that consumers should immediately stop using the recalled steam cleaners and contact Bissell for either a $60 credit or a $40 refund.

Consumers can click here to register for the recall and for instructions on how to cut the cord and upload a photo of the steam cleaner showing the model number.

The recalled products were sold nationwide at Target, Walmart, and other department and home goods stores. They were also sold online at www.bissell.com, www.amazon.com, www.hsn.com and other websites from Aug. 2008 through May 2024 for $35 and $40, or $70 for a two-pack.

Meanwhile, Bissell is recalling nearly 160,000 of its Multi Reach Hand and Floor Vacuum Cleaners due to a fire risk with the product’s lithium-ion batteries.
