  • Why: The product may contain undeclared milk and walnuts.
  • Where: The Trader Joe’s pesto allergy alert is active in the United States.

Bakkavor USA issued an allergy alert for tubs of Trader Joe’s pesto that were falsely placed in tubs labeled for hummus dip.

The U.S. Food & Drug Administration (FDA) website published the voluntary alert May 9. It applies to Trader Joe’s Genova Pesto (SKU# 15759) with UPC 0015 7353 on the side label and use-by date of 05/27/2023 with a timestamp between 06:28 and 07:07 printed on the bottom of the tub.

Bakkavor packaged the products with the right lids but in the wrong tubs, which list the ingredients, according to the Trader Joe’s allergy recall. The product may contain undeclared milk and walnuts for this reason.

“People who have an allergy or severe sensitivity to milk or walnuts run the risk of serious or life-threatening allergic reactions if they consume this product,” the recall states.

No illnesses or allergic reactions have been reported to date, and all potentially impacted product has been removed from sale, the company says. It is conducting an investigation into the root cause of the error.

Bakkavor is not currently facing legal action over the allergy alert, but Top Class Actions follows such alerts closely as they sometimes lead to class action lawsuits.

Retail store discovered mispackaging, Trader Joe’s pesto allergy alert states

Bakkavor initiated the alert after a retail store discovered the Genova Pesto mistakenly packaged into tubs marked “Hummus Dip,” the company says. The tubs do not contain an allergen declaration of milk or walnuts, which are both found in the Genova Pesto.

The company distributed the affected product to Trader Joe’s stores in Alabama, Arizona, California, Florida, Georgia, Idaho, Nevada, North Carolina, Oregon, South Carolina, Tennessee, Utah, Virginia and Washington between April 28 and 30, 2023.

Consumers who have purchased or received any donations of Trader Joe’s Genova Pesto and have a milk or walnut allergy should not consume the product and can discard or return it to any Trader Joe’s for a full refund.

In other Trader Joe’s news, a dark chocolate consumer sued Trader Joe’s and its parent company, alleging the supermarket sells dark chocolate that contains high levels of heavy metals.
