To avoid a shock, handy people in the US and Canada should make sure they are not using a voltage tester that has been recalled by Klein Tools after the company discovered the tool may not work properly and fail to warn users of live wires.
The recall covers 1.69 million Klein Tools Non-Contact Voltage Tester Model NCVT-1 sold in the US and another 67,800 sold in Canada. The product can be identified by its “part number” NCVT-1, located on the side, and a date code ending in “H7.”
The recalled voltage tester was sold at Home Depot locations, electrical wholesalers, hardware stores, and through industrial distributors nationwide between January 2020 and March 2021. The item retailed at $17 individually or came in kits that cost between $40 and $68.
Issued Wednesday, the Consumer Product Safety Commission (CPSC) warns consumers to stop using the device and contact the company for a free replacement.
“The on/off button can remain depressed during the power on or power off cycle, causing the tester to work improperly,” says CPSC’s recall notice. “Consumers testing electrical sources could fail to be warned of the presence of live voltage if the tester is not properly operating, posing a shock hazard to the users.”
Klein Tools goes into more detail on its website about the problem, stating, “The on/off button of the NCVT-1 is intended to be pressed down and then released. If the button remains depressed during the power on or power off cycle, the tip of the tool remains illuminated in green, indicating the tool is ‘ready to detect voltage,’ when it is not.
Two incidents have been reported to the company, including one involving a user who was shocked as a result.
Consumers with questions can contact Klein Tools at 800-527-3099 during business hours or by email. More information about the recall can be found on the company’s website.
