A recall on Continental brand tires has been updated to include model year 2019 GMC Sierra and Chevy Silverado pickups due to concerns of “overcuring.”

The recall notice says that overcured tires “may experience a carcass break in the sidewall with sudden air loss or could develop a belt edge separation which could lead to partial or full tread/belt loss.” These issues could lead to a dangerous vehicle safety defect, increasing the risk of a crash.

Continental Tires originally issued the recall in November, but failed to include affected GMC Sierra and Chevy Silverado trucks equipped with the faulty part in a service bulletin to dealers. As a result, service centers failed to identity certain 2019 trucks that should have received replacement tires.

The total number of pickup trucks affected by the additional recall is currently unknown, according to GM Authority

Owners are instructed to visit an authorized dealer who will conduct an inspection and replace the tires if necessary, free of charge. GM says it will notify affected owners. Alternatively, those who own a GMC Sierra or Chevy Silverado can visit GM’s website and enter their VIN to see if they are affected by this or other vehicle safety recalls.

Top Class Actions will continue to monitor this and other vehicle safety recalls to help keep consumers informed.

Indeed, Continental Tires is not the only tire maker to experience problems with their product this year. Hundreds of thousands of tires made by Cooper and sold under eight other brand names were swept up in two nationwide recalls concerning sidewall problems that can lead to rapid deflation, according to an earlier recall notice issued by the National Highway Traffic Administration.
