Sara Lee is asking people to destroy specific lots of its pecan pies after it was discovered the desserts may contain undeclared peanuts.
The bakery company announced the recall of certain Sara Lee, Chef Pierre and Devonshire pecan pies produced between March 4 and April 1 this year through the U.S. Food and Drug Administration Wednesday.
It said that, because the product may contain undeclared peanuts, those who have an allergy or sensitivity to peanuts run the risk of a “serious or life-threatening allergic reaction if they consume the product.”
Sara Lee is not currently facing legal action over the recall, but Top Class Actions follows recalls closely as they sometimes end in class action lawsuits.
The company said there had been no reports of illness or injury so far.
It said the raw pecans used to make the pecan pies were contaminated with “residual peanuts” during their transport and storage by a supplier.
“Immediate steps were taken to prevent recurrence,” it said.
The pies were distributed nationwide through various retailers, Sara Lee said. It is asking those retailers and distributors to “recall and destroy all product in market.”
Anyone who thinks they may have an affected pie should confirm the lot code with the retailer they bought it from and ask for a full refund if it’s a match.
