Costco Warns That Bad Seal on S&W Organic Black Beans May Lead to Botulism

Costco members were warned of a faulty seal on cans of S&W Organic Black Beans sold at warehouses nationwide between Feb. 19 and April 20, 2021.

In a warning letter dated April 22, 2021, the manufacturer, Faribault Foods, said that the cans may have a compromised hermetic seal that can cause the 15-ounce cans to leak, bloat, or let in bacteria that can cause botulism poisoning. Eating S&W Organic Black Beans contaminated with the bacteria can lead to serious illness, warned the company in its letter urging consumers to return the product for a full refund.

“Clostridium botulinum poisoning in humans can begin from six hours to two weeks after eating food that contains the toxin,” states the letter. “Symptoms may include double vision, blurred vision, drooping eyelids, slurred speech, difficulty swallowing, and muscle weakness. Botulism poisoning can cause paralysis of the breathing muscles, which can result in death unless assistance with breathing (mechanical ventilation) is provided.”

The letter says that Faribault Foods is voluntarily recalling certain lots of S&W Organic Black Beans in conjunction with the Food and Drug Administration. The recall of black beans sold at Costco also includes O Organic Organic Black Beans and O Organic Organic Chili Beans sold by Faribault.

The specific lots and best buy dates of the recalled S&W Organic Black Beans and other products can be found on the FDA recall notice

The FDA notice and Faribault’s letter to Costco members says that the company became aware of the compromised seal on the products after consumer complaints were submitted. They state that no injuries or illnesses have been reported yet.

Top Class Actions will continue to monitor this and other food safety recalls to help keep consumers informed.
