Birds Eye Broccoli Tots are the latest product to be recalled over fears the tots could contain metal fragments and small rocks — and they’ve already left two shoppers in need of dental work.
Conagra Brands, Inc. announced the voluntary recall of four lots of its Birds Eye Broccoli Tots in 12 ounce packages after it was made aware of the issue through calls from consumers. The company says it has received two reports of dental damage associated with the recalled product.
The tots all share the case UPC 20-0-14500-00125-6 and item UPC 00-0-14500-00125-2. The affected batches are: lot code 4715105620 with the best by date of AUG-19-2022 and AUG-25-2022; lot code 4715104220 with best by date AUG-11-2022 and AUG-12-2022; lot code 4715113720 with best by date NOV-17-2022; and lot code 4715113020 with best by date NOV-10-2022.
Conagra Brands says it will work with retail customers to make sure that the recalled products are removed from store shelves.
The Conagra recall comes as a range of other products, including blueberries, cupcakes, and Kool-Aid, have also been recalled for the same reason. The contamination from metal fragments is reportedly occurring during the manufacturing process.
In September, California-based Driscoll’s Inc. announced a recall of blueberries from a grower in Peru for the potential presence of small metallic spheres.
Then, in October, Flower Foods announced a recall for some of its Tastykake Krimpets after discovering that fragments of metal mesh wire had gotten mixed in with the cupcakes, according to the FDA. The products include Chocolate, Creme-Filled Chocolate, and Buttercream Iced Creme-Filled Chocolate, which were shipped to retailers in New Jersey, Maryland, Delaware, New York, Virginia, West Virginia, Pennsylvania, and Washington, D.C.
The metal fragment contamination issue has also affected beverage products, with Costco issuing a recall on Nov. 12 for Kool-Aid Tropical Punch mix sold at certain Costco Business Centers and warehouse locations in Los Angeles and the Northwest.
Costco also published a recall for several frozen desserts sold at its locations, including its Clio Snacks brand Mixed Berry & Peach Less Sugar, Vanilla & Strawberry Minis, and Vanilla & Strawberry frozen yogurt bars. Clio Snacks says that the products may have been contaminated with small pieces of metal fragments due to an issue with a since-fixed production machine.
Kroger also issued a recall this month for its Country Oven baked goods after it discovered a possible metal fragment contamination, according to the FDA.
The company says that metal fragments may have gotten into starch that is used to manufacture the Country Oven baked goods, including cinnamon rolls, white cake, chocolate cake, cheese pockets, and bowtie danish, among others.
