Menards store and parking lot Menards has been hit with a class action lawsuit by consumers who claim that the home improvement company offers a delusive rebate program.

Plaintiff Amy Childers says she visited the Menards website to purchase fence panels during an advertised “11% Off Everything” promotion.

After she completed her purchase, she allegedly downloaded the rebate coupon that corresponded to her purchase from the Menards’ Rebate Center online. She then filled out the coupon and mailed it to the address listed on the website.

Childers says she waited the six-to-eight week period for the rebate to be processed but did not receive anything in the mail from Menards.

Then, in December 2018, she was told her purchase did not qualify for the 11 percent off rebate because the items she purchased were on sale and therefore did not qualify.

Childers claims the fact that the items were on sale, and thus ineligible for a rebate, was not disclosed to her prior to her purchase. In addition, she says she didn’t see any language informing her that her purchase was not eligible for the rebate at any time during her purchase.

“Menards breached its contract with Childers by failing to send the rebate checks to Childers at all, or by failing to send the full amount promised,” the Menards class action lawsuit states.

The plaintiff says Menards created the mail-in rebate program to “reduce the issuance and redemption of rebates.”

Also, the Menards class action notes that Menards intentionally and systematically fails to pay the 11 percent rebate to those who have followed the correct process of attempting to obtain the rebate.

“Menards’ rebate process systematically denies its customers the full value of the rebates that they earned by following the terms of Menards’ rebate program, purchasing items during the rebate promotional period, and timely submitting the required rebate paperwork,” the plaintiff states.

The Menards class action wants Menards to stop its “unfair, deceptive and illegal practices,” which includes its misrepresentations of its rebate program. The plaintiffs also want Menards to provide the rebates to those who have dutifully followed the rebate process.

The Menards class action lawsuit also claims that the company’s rebate program is “the best of both worlds” as they can sell their items at full price knowing that numerous customers will never receive the rebates to which they are entitled.

“Menards’ rebate process is designed to deny rebates that its customers earned by the terms of its rebate program after purchasing items during the rebate promotions and timely submitting the required paperwork,” claim the plaintiffs.

The Menards class action point to hundreds of online complaints about Menards’ rebate program and state that after customers send in their rebate forms, they have no way of tracking their specific rebates. They state that the only way to contact Menards is through an online form or a P.O. Box number.

I have a over $300 in rebates that never came to me. They showed up on the rebate center but I never receive the physical rebate. Several times I have sent correspondences stating this fact. Nothing, no reply. Just went on now ALL my old rebates are gone from their site. It makes me super angry that they ripped me off.

I am 82 years old. In April I purchased 2 “Brand New” Pelonis 8000 portable air conditioner units for $278.61 each which included an 11% rebate per unit. I never received the rebates. And I received via FedEx shipments 1 new unit and 1 “used” unit which was missing the window setup parts. Menards refused to issue a refund.

I purchased an entire bathroom remodel worth of materials because of their 11% rebate in 2022. Never received anything after I submitted all the required paperwork and receipts. Approximately $5k in stand up shower, vanity, shower head, electrical supplies, lighting, towel racks, etc. Complete scam, when I would call and check the status online it was always pending. I should have received roughy $550 in rebates. What a waste of time!

  5. Laura Stierle says:

I also did not receive my rebate of over $500.00

I have never received a rebate and neither did my daughter after spending over a grand on an appliance. I’d add my name to a lawsuit because I’m angry. They are deceptive.

I almost threw away my most recent Menards “rebate” that was disguised as an advertisement. Per Menards policy, that rebate would not have been replaced. Their rebate coupons must be obtained by mail in a manner that prevents tracking or accountability. Their scheme involves a cumbersome mail-in procedure requiring original receipts that discourages the effort, a time limit for submission that is easily exceeded, and a reply interval that makes it easy to forget about the rebate altogether. More than once, I have submitted rebate requests in a timely manner, following all the rules, and not received a reply.

In their advertising, Menards states a product’s price, like “$488 after 11% rebate”, when the price is in no way affected by the rebate. The rebate is nothing but a coupon for a future purchase. This coupon does not reduce the cost of the advertised item. If the future purchase is less than the rebate amount, the remainder of the rebate is forfeited.

These days Menards is making the rebates look like advertisement from another company. We just got one today that looks like advertisement from IKEA. Almost threw it in the trash, but decided to check the back and saw the Menards address in tiny writing. We took a closer look and holy moly it’s the rebate! They made it look so thin that if you didn’t pay attention, you would never know that the card opens up.

Let’s not forget that they advertise the 11% lower price on the shelves so your total is higher than you expect and you won’t be seeing that “savings” for 8 weeks. They’re barely being competitive with Home Depot on pricing so this allows them to make 11% on the exact same items they had before the sale.

  9. Mike says:

Menards has a real scam going with this perpetual 11% rebate offer, They know most of the people won’t get the receipts mailed in on time if ever, even if you do, yo still have to spend the rebate at their own store! Menards has my blood boiling every time I buy from them. These days I go out of my way to avoid Menards just because I hate getting ripped off……

    1. D McM says:

I would reiterate not being able to track a rebate and then have a 6 week time limit to submit the rebate.

We have submitted a rebate with in the six weeks. We have waited for Menards to send us our rebate. It did not come in the stated amount of time 8 weeks). Then when we finally got a hold of the company, we were informed that our rebate has been “lost” and it was now past the window of opportunity for us to file our rebate again.

Basically, we did what we were told to do, the company “lost” or sat on our rebate. By the time the 8 weeks was up, the company would told us we were too late to refile after we navigated the the hard to find and hard to navigate ways to contact them.
