As a public service, the U.S. Food and Drug Administration (FDA) has published an expansion of a voluntary recall of canned Science Diet dog food on May 21, 2019.

The expansion of the Science Diet recall was really an inadvertent omission from the original recall list from January 2019 and involves a single can date and lot code. The concern regarding this date and lot code of canned foods is, once again, a vitamin premix that was too heavy with vitamin D. The product added to the recall is Hill’s Prescription Diet i/d Canine Chicken & Vegetable Stew 12.5oz, SKU number 3389, Lot Code 102020T21.

What Happened To Spark the Original January 2019 Science Diet Dog Food Recall?

According to a February 6 NBC Los Angeles article, within days of posting a recall of canned varieties of Science Diet dog food for excessive vitamin D, up to a dozen pet owners claimed on the Hill’s Pet Nutrition Facebook page that their pet had either become seriously ill or succumbed to the effects of the ‘heavy-handed’ vitamin mix. The vitamin mix has since been isolated to an anonymous supplier to the Hill’s headquartered in Texas with their own manufacturing facilities in Topeka, Kansas.

What Happened To Spark the Original January 2019 Science Diet Dog Food Recall?

As indicated by the NBC report, Hill’s has claimed to be heartbroken by the situation and notes that most of their staff are pet owners and feel the losses very personally. The article indicates the company has reached out and asked to speak with each of the affected dog parents through private messaging and phone calls when possible.

What Are Symptoms That A Dog Has Consumed Too Much Vitamin D?

According to a separate NBC Los Angeles article posted on March 21, 2019, symptoms of too much vitamin D in the diet of a canine can express itself in several ways. The dog may excessively drool or have sudden unquenchable thirst. They may throw up repeatedly, lose their drive to eat and undergo weight loss as a result.

Perhaps the biggest problem with too big of a dose of Vitamin D is that it can interfere with the renal system—or kidney—function in the dog. This can ultimately lead to the animal’s death if it completely fails. As indicated by the more recent NBC article, Hill’s recommends checking in with a veterinarian if you suspect your dog may have ingested some of the recalled products.

Is This The Only Expansion of The Recall List?

The original January recall was expanded in early March as well. The list of affected products includes several sizes and a variety of flavors of Hill’s canned dog foods. Dog foods added to the recall in March include the following eight products:

  • Hill’s® Prescription Diet® k/d® Kidney Care with Lamb Canned Dog Food, 13oz, 12-pack
