Cat taking pill from vet's handConsumers want to know whether or not Cosequin cat supplements work. These Cosequin glucosamine supplements are the subject of complaints from consumers who say the product’s ingredients don’t have the beneficial effects they’re advertised to have.

Why Use Joint Supplements?

Most animals, especially household cats and dogs, experience a decline in joint function as they age. This is usually marked by decreased mobility and possibly even signs of pain as the animal walks around.

Naturally, pet owners who spot these signs will grow concerned and begin researching ways to address this problem. Plenty of new supplements on the market claim that cats and dogs can benefit from consuming products that allegedly help with cartilage health.

When it comes to joint supplements, the Veterinary Centers of America notes that the ingredient glucosamine is one of, if not the most, widely used nutraceuticals in the world. Glucosamine is naturally made in the body, but supplements are made from synthetic materials such as chitin. Chitin comes from the shells of crustaceans.

Numerous different pet conditions can reportedly be treated with glucosamine, although a veterinarian should always be consulted about an owner’s intent to use these products with an at-home animal.

Are Supplements Safe to Use with Pets?

According to the American Veterinary Medical Association, one-third of all households that have dogs use supplements and one fifth of households with cats use supplements to address health issues. Many of these pet owners have purchased their supplements directly from a veterinarian.

Not all pet owners call their veterinarians directly about the use of supplements. The American College of Veterinary Nutrition website states that supplements for pets are, in fact, not recommended unless specifically prescribed by a veterinarian.

Feline joint health and arthritis are issues that reportedly must be addressed for cats as they get older. Many anecdotal stories promote that joint and pain issues can be successfully managed with natural products such as supplements, rather than prescription pain drugs.

Glucosamine and sodium chondroitin sulfate are key components found in supplements used by humans, but there are questions about whether or not Cosequin cat supplements actually do anything to improve the animal’s health.

Consumers allege that Cosequin joint supplements, in particular, use misleading statements to draw in pet owners who will purchase these for cats as well as dogs. For example, Nutramax says that their Cosequin products are nutritional supplements based on scientific research. However, critics say the studies referenced by the company are questionable or show the opposite of the Nutramax arguments.

The packaging on the product and the website for these supplements say they can protect and support joints and improve joint mobility. Some pet owners who relied on these representations say they would not have bought Cosequin cat supplements if they had known that scientific studies found no evidence of benefits for joint health.

I have a 13 year old Great Dane, Buddy. Since becoming aware of the many health issues that the average Great Dane will face later in life because of their very large stature and the punishment their size puts on their joints and bones, and due to the misleading information I had read on bottles of Cosequin regarding the studies highly effective and positive results this supplement had on dogs with similar issues, I have spent so much money buying bottles and bottles of this stuff over the course of Buddy’s life.
