A dog runs in a field.Hill Prescription Diet dog food was recently the buzz in a media storm over possible toxicity that may endanger the lives of dogs. The maker of this pet food is now facing growing legal concerns over dog fatalities.

The recall covers certain canned dog food products sold under the Hill Prescription Diet and Hill Science Diet brands. Pet owners who might have cans of dog food affected by the recall on their shelves are encouraged to contact the maker of the dog food and not to feed it to the pet under any circumstances.

Lawsuits Target Makers of Canned Dog Food with Too Much Vitamin D

According to several lawsuits recently filed involving the Hill Prescription Diet dog food, the company took too long to issue a recall about the canned dog food that had possibly toxic levels of vitamin D. Pet owners say the dog food they bought was so toxic that it led to the illnesses and death of several dogs.

The specialty dog food, according to lawsuits, was sold to tens of thousands of customers. The recall of 13.5 million cans of the dog food led to a class action that was filed on behalf of a group of people who say their dogs suffered as a result of the high levels of vitamin D inside this canned dog food.

Many of the consumers who purchased this canned dog food say they were never told about the possibility of high levels of toxicity and that many of their pets had to undergo emergency medical treatments or even passed away directly as a result of these problems.

According to CBS MoneyWatch, the U.S. Food and Drug Administration says that a total of nine companies that have issued recalls for dry dog food have a common contract manufacturer. One of those brands had cited a formulation error.

Dangerous levels of vitamin D could cause fatalities. In total, Hill’s Pet Nutrition voluntarily recalled 25 of their products over concerns related to the excessive vitamin D.

Even though vitamin D is considered an important nutrient for dogs, high levels of it can lead to vitamin D toxicity. This can cause death or kidney failure in canines.

Dogs who do survive consumption of Hill Science Diet and Prescription Diet dog food might have problems such as heart or kidney disease classified as long term impairments that require lifelong management by the owner. Dogs showing signs of excessive levels of vitamin D can exhibit symptoms such as loss of appetite, frequent urination, vomiting, weight loss, excessive drooling and increased thirst.

The company claims in response to the recall that they’ve isolated the error and have put in place additional testing procedures to minimize the chances that it will happen in the future.

However, many of the owners of pets who have been directly affected by this issue argue that the company did not go far enough in doing everything possible to notify owners about the danger and exposed the dogs unnecessarily to higher risks. While many cans have been pulled from store shelves, others that were already purchased could still be in pet owners’ possession or even given to animal shelters.
