- Where: The Sonos app class action lawsuit was filed in California federal court.
A new class action lawsuit alleges Sonos Inc. redesigned its app in a way that has rendered the company’s products “unreliable or unusable.”
Plaintiffs Scott Blair, Ryan Bolanowski and John Welch claim the Sonos’ redesigned app is “buggy” and has removed or disabled features that were previously available, such as alarm scheduling, music library access, playlist editing and the ability to search across multiple streaming devices simultaneously. Sonos sells speakers and other audio equipment.
“Sonos users expected a fully functional app and devices but instead received a degraded app that sometimes rendered their current Sonos products ineffective or useless,” the Sonos class action says.
The plaintiffs claim Sonos released the redesigned app despite knowing that it was not ready, as evidenced by employee concerns that were later reported.
They also claim Sonos failed to warn users of the known issues and continued to market the new version as an improvement.
Sonos redesigned app lacks stable connection, class action alleges
The plaintiffs argue Sonos’ redesigned app frequently crashes, fails to connect with devices and lacks stable connection to Sonos products, resulting in interruptions in audio playback and long delays between input and responses.
They argue Sonos is guilty of breach of contract and violating the Computer Fraud and Abuse Act, California Computer Data Access and Fraud Act, False and Misleading Advertising Law, the state’s Unfair Competition Law and the Illinois Uniform Deceptive Trade Practices Act and Consumer Fraud and Deceptive Business Practices Act.
The plaintiffs demand a jury trial and request declaratory and injunctive relief and an award of damages for themselves and all class members.
In 2023, Sonos was awarded $32.5 million in a lawsuit against Google for infringing on the company’s smart speaker patent through Google’s speaker sales.

I have a Sonos system and not able to use it because the app doesn’t work right.
Over 5k invested into sonos now to have the app tell me features or older speakers will eventually not work.
$2500 worth of bricks. Sonos used yo be the best out there, Now not so much.
I have purchased over 4000.00 dollars in Sonos speakers in the past few years. There incredible sound made movies come alive..now they just collect dust because they to frustrated to use anymore with the newer app.!! Why don’t they just change it back so everything works again ?
I have sonos and had problems using the app after the redesign
I have a SONOS Play:1 and a SONOS One. Both worked fine for years until I moved the Play:1 and was forced to update the SONOS app. Since then, about 5-6 months ago, neither speaker has worked. The app fails to recognize the devices, even though they’re right next to the router. I briefly got one connected using SONOS’s own troubleshooting steps, but it wouldn’t connect to my Apple Music and/or won’t play music, and later the devices were unrecognized again on the app. This cycle keeps repeating, and I eventually gave up trying to fix it/get the devices to work. This seems tied to the app update, not the devices or network.
