A Minnesota woman recently filed a lawsuit against Unum Life Insurance Company of America over a denied claim for benefits from the insurance giant.
The plaintiff, Paula M., claims in her lawsuit that she was denied claim for benefits from Unum against the rules of the policy she held through her employment with AeroSystems Engineering.
The lawsuit notes that, as an employee of AeroSystems Engineering, Paula held a long-term disability insurance policy through Unum, yet when she became disabled, she was denied claim for benefits against the policy’s rules.
According to the Unum lawsuit, Paula suffered from a health condition that caused her to take a leave of absence from her work as a finance manager for AeroSystems Engineering in September, 2015.
She returned to work in November, 2015, resuming part-time duties.
She has continued her part-time work to the present day. Her medical providers have stated that she is unable to perform her work on a full-time basis, qualifying her for the long-term disability benefits outlined in her Unum policy.
However, after Paula applied for long-term disability benefits through her plan, Unum denied claim for benefits pursuant to her plan.
The plaintiff responded immediately by appealing this denial of benefits, and provided all supporting documents and evidence that Unum requested.
Even after supplying this evidence and exhausting her options in this administrative approach, Unum upheld its original decision and denied claim for benefits.
In this Unum lawsuit, the plaintiff claims that Unum “has violated the clear and unambiguous terms of the applicable Policy” and requests relief, including but not limited to reversal of her previously denied claim for benefits.
