Consumers who own Walmart Mainstays candles may want to be aware of reports that these candles can potentially explode, resulting in property damage, burns, or other injuries.

Even if you do not recognize the brand name, you might recognize Walmart Mainstays candles when you see them. These popular candles come in glass jars, often with glass, wood, or metal tops. Mainstays candles come in more than 50 scents, including Hazelnut Cream, Warm Apple Pie, Cozy Gathering, and Pumpkin Spice. They are sold at Walmart as well as online, and are made in the U.S. Most of these candles are priced between $3 and $10.

Although Walmart Mainstays candles are popular due to their strong scents and low price point, multiple customers have reported incidents of these candles exploding and causing injuries.

How Can a Candle Explode?

There are a few reasons why a candle may explode or produce excessive flames. Sometimes when candles are left to burn for several hours, they may become too hot. When this occurs to candles in glass jars, the high level of heat may cause the glass to explode. Another cause of exploding candles may be a build up of soot or wick remnants in the wax. If debris and soot clogs the candle wick, it may also cause a glass jar candle to break.

In order to avoid a candle explosion, consumers may be able to reduce the amount of time that their candle stays lit. Blowing out the candle after a few hours of use may prevent the jar from becoming too hot. Another way to mitigate the risk of an explosion is to trim the wick and remove pieces of the wick or soot from the inside of the jar.

What Damage Could an Exploding Walmart Mainstays Candle Do?

Several consumers have left comments on Walmart’s website, complaining about malfunctioning Mainstays candles. According to one review left for a Lilac Breeze scented candle, the glass jar cracked after only one hour of the candle being lit.

Another customer who purchased a Cranberry Mandarin candle reported that after burning the candle for several hours, she noticed soot on her bedding and ceiling fan from the candle’s smoke. Many other customers have also reported excessive soot from Mainstay candles damaging their walls or personal items.

One customer who purchased a Warm Apple Pie candle in 2019 posted a picture along with a review, showing that the candle had exploded and damaged their countertops. The candle appeared to be melted and broken, and had allegedly caused a large charred section of the counter.

In addition to property damage, at least one consumer has made claims that an exploding Mainstay candle resulted in injuries.

Are There Any Walmart Candle Lawsuits?

At least one woman has filed a lawsuit against Walmart regarding the company’s Mainstays candles. Plaintiff Shelby E. filed her lawsuit against the corporation in early 2020 after she claims she was physically injured by an exploded candle.

According to Shelby, she had only burned her candle for about an hour when it suddenly started to produce flames that were high enough to damage the ceiling with soot. She claims that these flames did not appear to be coming solely from the wick, and were instead emerging from the pool of melted wax. As she was afraid that the flaming candle might cause her house to catch fire, she pushed the candle into the sink, where it exploded. Shelby claims that the candle explosion sent fiery wax through the room, hitting her in the thigh. According to her, she suffered second degree burns on her thigh from the explosion.

In addition to seeking compensation for medical treatments and medical expenses related to her burns, she is also seeking compensation for lost wages and property damage. Additionally, Shelby claims that she suffers from permanent damage to the area where she was burned, including scarring and sensitivity to the sun. Her lawsuit aims to recover compensation not only for herself, but for anyone else injured by a Mainstay candle.

Is There a Walmart Mainstays Candle Recall?

Although Walmart has recalled other candles including Home Trends candle gift sets, no recall has been issued for Mainstay candles. Instead, customers who have experienced a Mainstay candle explosion may be able to speak with an attorney about their legal rights. Some victims of candle explosions or injuries may be eligible to join or file a class action lawsuit against Walmart.
