man placing food into a bosch microwave

A class action lawsuit has been waged against Bosch by consumers who claim the company’s drawer microwaves are prone to catching on fire.

Plaintiffs Joshua Edin and Carolyn Giandonato say the defect and the resulting damage is not a result of overcooking, as it could take only about 30 seconds for the product to overheat and produce smoke.

Edin claims he purchased a Bosch-branded microwave drawer with model Number HMD8451UC from Amazon.com when remodeling his kitchen. Edin says he specifically picked out the Bosch because of the name, the brand reputation and the design of the microwave which fits into a kitchen island, under the countertop.

On Sept. 22 2019, Edin was allegedly melting butter for 30 seconds when the microwave started making clicking noises that sounded like an electrical fire. He claims when he opened the microwave drawer, smoke began coming out of the microwave.

After turning off the microwave, Edin argues that he saw that a magnetron tube had been burned and portions of the waveguide were also charred. After this incident, Edin states he purchased a new magnetron tube and replaced it in the microwave.

The plaintiff notes that the magnetron tube is not the defective part of the microwave, so the product will probably fail in the near future.

Edin reportedly did online research about the product and discovered that other individuals were having problems with their Bosch microwave.

“Because Bosch unlawfully concealed the defect from Mr. Edin before his purchase, as well as after the Microwave was installed in his home and being used, he did not suspect (and had no reason to suspect) that there was anything wrong with his Microwave until the defect manifested,” according to the Bosch class action lawsuit.

Edin claims that if he knew about the defect in the microwave, he wouldn’t have purchased it or would have paid less for the product.

Giandonato allegedly had a similar incident with her Bosch microwave. She says she purchased a Bosch-branded Microwave Oven Drawer with model Number HMD8451UC. She states that she paid $1,196 for the product.

After it was installed, her microwave also started making clicking noises when heating food. She says the noises were associated with arcing inside of the microwave, with evidence that there is a defect in the product and that it will likely fail in the foreseeable future.

Bosch microwave drawerThe defects in the microwaves makes the product unfit for the ordinary purpose for which they are used, which is to safely heat up food up to 950 watts.

The Bosch class action lawsuit argues that Bosch should have known about the defect in the microwave and that the defect caused the product to function improperly during their expected useful life.

The plaintiffs maintain that Bosch should have known about the defects because of consumer complaints, which includes years of public internet posts about the product. Despite knowing about the defect, Bosch did not do anything to remedy the defect or stop the microwaves from being sold.

“Instead, Bosch replaced the defective Microwaves with equally defective Microwaves, replaced the magnetron with a new magnetron which did not remedy the defect, or improperly denied warranty claims,” argues the Bosch class action lawsuit.

Edin and Giandonato say that Bosch had a duty to disclose the defect and not conceal it from the plaintiffs and other potential Class Members. Bosch’s failure to disclose the defects puts consumers at risk of personal injury and/or property damage, they claim.

The plaintiffs note that when corresponding with customers, Bosch does not disclose that the microwave suffers from a defect. As a result, reasonable customers are continuing to purchase the microwave and installing them in their homes, even though it is unsafe to do so, argues the Bosch class action lawsuit.

“Bosch has wrongfully placed on Plaintiffs and Class members the burden, expense, and difficulty involved in discovering the defect, repairing and replacing the Microwaves (potentially multiple times), and paying for the cost of damages caused by the defect,” the plaintiffs allege.

In addition, the Bosch class action claims that Bosch breached its warranty at the time that the microwaves were shipped because the products were defective when they came off the assembly line.

Prospective Class Members include: “All persons residing in the State of Minnesota who purchased a Bosch Microwave Drawer, model numbers HMD8053UC and HMD8451UC.”

Have the same HMB50152UC/05 built in microwave. Creaking noise and fire starting coming from the top. Is there still a lawsuit going on? How can I be part of it?

We have a Bosch microwave that creates the same sparks and issues HMB50152UC/05. Our whole neighborhood is having these problems.

  3. Felicia Skinner says:

My microwave caught fire 11/17/22 for while i was popping popcorn for no apparent reason. I have a microwave /oven combo unit purchased in 8/2018. 800 series

  4. Stephen Snyder says:

Our Bosch microwave drawer made arching sounds, snapped and then smoke rolled out. Called Bosch, they outhorized a repairman to look at it. He pulled it out took off the hood and it was charred. He took it to his shop then sent us pictures along with sending them to Bosch. Bosch doesn’t want to stand behind their 2.5 year old microwave. They want to pro-rate it for us to buy a new one. We paid $1,299.00 for ours now they are over $2,000.00. Is there still a class action suit and can we join it?

  5. Ricky Henry says:

Our Bosch microwave (HMD8451UC/01) manufactured April 2016, just started a loud humming while in use and was accompanied by a strong electrical burning. I was looking to see if others were having similar issues and found my way here.

  6. Tyler West says:

My Bosch microwave arcs and catches fire on the foil piece on the ceiling. How can I join the suit? Thanks.

  7. Chelsea Weiand says:

We also have Bosch HMD8451UC/01. We only moved in a few months ago to this house and the microwave was pre-existing. Since the first week we moved in, it has randomly tripped the breaker. I just found this article tonight, this is horrifying!

  8. Sergio Carrasco says:

I also have a Bosch Model HMB50152UC/05 with the same arcing issue. Our home builder had us choose between Bosch and GE appliances. We paid an additional $1000 to upgrade to all Bosch appliances because I felt they were superior. I was wrong.

  9. Joseph Avila says:

We have the exact same issue. The flimsy piece on the ceiling of the microwave keeps arching. We replaced it per Bosch’s advice and it still archs. The microwave was just under a year old and always kept clean.

  10. Ying Zhu says:

Have a HMB50152UC/05, sparking with fire and smoke.
