man placing food into a bosch microwave

A class action lawsuit has been waged against Bosch by consumers who claim the company’s drawer microwaves are prone to catching on fire.

Plaintiffs Joshua Edin and Carolyn Giandonato say the defect and the resulting damage is not a result of overcooking, as it could take only about 30 seconds for the product to overheat and produce smoke.

Edin claims he purchased a Bosch-branded microwave drawer with model Number HMD8451UC from Amazon.com when remodeling his kitchen. Edin says he specifically picked out the Bosch because of the name, the brand reputation and the design of the microwave which fits into a kitchen island, under the countertop.

On Sept. 22 2019, Edin was allegedly melting butter for 30 seconds when the microwave started making clicking noises that sounded like an electrical fire. He claims when he opened the microwave drawer, smoke began coming out of the microwave.

After turning off the microwave, Edin argues that he saw that a magnetron tube had been burned and portions of the waveguide were also charred. After this incident, Edin states he purchased a new magnetron tube and replaced it in the microwave.

The plaintiff notes that the magnetron tube is not the defective part of the microwave, so the product will probably fail in the near future.

Edin reportedly did online research about the product and discovered that other individuals were having problems with their Bosch microwave.

“Because Bosch unlawfully concealed the defect from Mr. Edin before his purchase, as well as after the Microwave was installed in his home and being used, he did not suspect (and had no reason to suspect) that there was anything wrong with his Microwave until the defect manifested,” according to the Bosch class action lawsuit.

Edin claims that if he knew about the defect in the microwave, he wouldn’t have purchased it or would have paid less for the product.

Giandonato allegedly had a similar incident with her Bosch microwave. She says she purchased a Bosch-branded Microwave Oven Drawer with model Number HMD8451UC. She states that she paid $1,196 for the product.

After it was installed, her microwave also started making clicking noises when heating food. She says the noises were associated with arcing inside of the microwave, with evidence that there is a defect in the product and that it will likely fail in the foreseeable future.

Bosch microwave drawerThe defects in the microwaves makes the product unfit for the ordinary purpose for which they are used, which is to safely heat up food up to 950 watts.

The Bosch class action lawsuit argues that Bosch should have known about the defect in the microwave and that the defect caused the product to function improperly during their expected useful life.

The plaintiffs maintain that Bosch should have known about the defects because of consumer complaints, which includes years of public internet posts about the product. Despite knowing about the defect, Bosch did not do anything to remedy the defect or stop the microwaves from being sold.

“Instead, Bosch replaced the defective Microwaves with equally defective Microwaves, replaced the magnetron with a new magnetron which did not remedy the defect, or improperly denied warranty claims,” argues the Bosch class action lawsuit.

Edin and Giandonato say that Bosch had a duty to disclose the defect and not conceal it from the plaintiffs and other potential Class Members. Bosch’s failure to disclose the defects puts consumers at risk of personal injury and/or property damage, they claim.

The plaintiffs note that when corresponding with customers, Bosch does not disclose that the microwave suffers from a defect. As a result, reasonable customers are continuing to purchase the microwave and installing them in their homes, even though it is unsafe to do so, argues the Bosch class action lawsuit.

“Bosch has wrongfully placed on Plaintiffs and Class members the burden, expense, and difficulty involved in discovering the defect, repairing and replacing the Microwaves (potentially multiple times), and paying for the cost of damages caused by the defect,” the plaintiffs allege.

In addition, the Bosch class action claims that Bosch breached its warranty at the time that the microwaves were shipped because the products were defective when they came off the assembly line.

Prospective Class Members include: “All persons residing in the State of Minnesota who purchased a Bosch Microwave Drawer, model numbers HMD8053UC and HMD8451UC.”

My Bosch microwave HMD8451UC manufactured in 2018 installed June 2019 went on Fire!!! May 14, 2021. Bosch sent a repair rep on June 8 he took pictures and left. A friend found the class action lawsuit on line. They have me running around in circles trying to get this resolved. They know it can’t be fixed and refuse to take responsibility. My husband who is a Vietnam Vet, double amputee was using it when it caught fire my son put the fire out before it took out my counter. They know what’s going, do they think I want another product from them No! Just be honest and tell the truth don’t keep telling me nonsense about we need 48 hours for a decision.

My 3 year old Bosch over stove has been repaired 3 times for flipping circuit breaker and shutting off. We live in a new home development. Most everyone ( we are on Facebook together) is experiencing the same thing. Some replaced theirs, some have paid to have fixed and by showing proof of ownership I have been getting more be repaired. But it is a joke because we bought a microwave for the counter to use when it breaks again and again

We have a Bosch HMD8451uc installed 2018, in January of 2021 the magnetron blew, becoming very noisy and smelling hot.
We still have no microwave , the repairs are taking forever. Bosch has shipped the dealer 2 magnetrons..both defective.

  5. Louis Katona says:

I have a Microwave made by Bosch model # HMD8451UC installed the end of 2018. The unit started not cooking food about a month ago. Then this week on Saturday 4/24/21 I turned the unit on to heat up my breakfast. The unit made a loud noise and I could smell something burning. I shut off the circuit breaker. I called an appliance company on Saturday and had them check the unit out. The appliance company recommended I call Bosch to check for any recalls. Today Monday 4/26/21 I spoke with customer service and they were not helpful at all. They said I have to pay a service company that they send out to look at the unit. I think this problem is a defect that Bosch is trying to cover up. I would like to join the class action lawsuit since I will most likely be forced to pay for another unit. I have no choice since the unit is built into my counter top.

I have same problem with the HMD8451UC/03 I purchased – a burnt magnetron. I am waiting to hear back on whether I can get a replacement magnetron tube but it appears that this part is no longer being manufactured by Sharp!

  8. Vikas Desai says:

I have same problem with the sparking and damaged waveguide. I replaced the magnetron tube and issue still persists.

  9. Sharla Levine says:

I have a Bosch microwave, model HMD8451UC, purchased in April 2018. After cooking, the drawer sometimes pops back open immediately after being closed. This seems to happen because of the heat, as best I can tell. After a few minutes of cool down, it generally closes properly. I have not experienced any arcing or smoking, yet.

  10. Patricia Calvo says:

2 1/2 year old Bosch drawer microwave tripped circuit breaker and two days later started smoking.
