Jif peanut butter salmonella contamination class action lawsuit overview:

  • Who: Cameron Bopp filed a class action lawsuit against The J.M. Smucker Co.
  • Why: Bopp claims Smucker’s misled the public about the safety of Jif peanut butter products, which it recalled due to possible salmonella contamination.
  • Where: The class action lawsuit was filed in South Carolina federal court.

The J.M Smucker Co. misled the public about the safety of its Jif peanut butter products the company recalled after discovering they may be contaminated with salmonella, a new class action lawsuit alleges.

Plaintiff Cameron Bopp claims Smucker’s falsely marketed the Jif peanut butter products, which had best-by dates of on or around May 20, as “containing ingredients safe for human consumption and being safe for use.”

Bopp alleges the contaminated Jif peanut butter products caused unwitting consumers to develop bacterial infections, gastrointestinal illness and other illnesses.

“Plaintiff and consumers do not know, and did not have a reason to know, that the Jif® peanut butter products purchased were contaminated with salmonella,” the Jif class action states.

Bopp argues consumers who purchase food products “expect the food they purchase to be safe for consumption and not contaminated by an organism ‘which can cause serious and sometimes fatal infections.’”

Jif peanut butter class action claims salmonella contamination linked to Smucker facility in Kentucky

The salmonella contamination was linked back to a Smucker’s facility in Lexington, Kentucky, and prompted investigations by the U.S. Food and Drug Administration and U.S. Centers for Disease Control and Prevention, according to the Jif class action.

Bopp claims Smucker’s is guilty of negligence, unjust enrichment, fraudulent concealment and breach of warranties.

He demands a jury trial and requests actual, general, special, incidental, statutory, punitive and consequential damages for himself and all class members.

Bopp wants to represent a nationwide class and South Carolina subclass of consumers who purchased Jif peanut butter products that were recalled on or around May 20, 2022.

Hello everyone I am trying to go to sleep but guess what about a year ago I ate some jiffy peanut butter and got sick very bad I didn’t know what was wrong till I thought to my self all I ate was spoons of peanut butter fast forward to about three days ago feeling sick stomach cramping so I start to think I feel the same way I feel when I got sick of the peanut butter about a year ago so I go to my kitchen get the peanut butter jiffy. Look at the numbers that I pulled up online. What do you know Kroger’s is still selling that Salmonella filled JiffY peanut butter and I’m feeling very bad stomach cramping hot and cold sweats. This is not fun, so who should we go after Krogers or Jeffy because Kroger’s is still selling the same infected jiffy peanut butter.
