Inspectors find multiple violations in Boar’s Head plant following recall

Inspectors reportedly found dozens of violations at a Virginia Boar’s Head plant at the center of a nationwide deli meat recall over listeria contamination. 

An inspection of the Boar’s head plant found mold, mildew and insects throughout, according to the U.S. Department of Agriculture’s Food Safety and Inspection Service, which said the facility will remain closed until it shows it can “produce safe product,” reports CBS News. 

Boar’s Head recalled all of its deli meats produced at the Jarratt, Virginia facility last month after the plant was connected to a nationwide listeria outbreak that has led to 57 hospitalizations in 18 states. 

The listeria outbreak has also been linked to at least nine deaths in total, including a pair of deaths in South Carolina and one each in the states of Illinois, New Jersey, Virginia, Florida, Tennessee, New Mexico and New York, reports CBS News. 

Boar’s Head expanded recall in August to include all items made at Virginia plant

Boar’s Head first initiated the deli meat recall in July amid the outbreak, before expanding the recall in August to include all products produced at the Jarratt, Virginia, facility. 

The expanded recall includes Boar’s Head items purchased before July 31, including different types of ham, sausage, bacon, bologna, and pork and beef frankfurters. 

The U.S. Centers for Disease Control and Prevention began investigating the listeria outbreak on July 19. 

Per CBS News, records released to the news outlet by the USDA’s Food Safety and Inspection Service showed there have been 69 instances of “noncompliance” flagged by inspectors at the Boar’s Head plant in Jarratt, Virginia, in the past year. 

The FSIS reportedly said it has suspended its inspection of the Boar’s Head facility at this time, meaning it will remain closed for the time being. 

A consumer filed a class action lawsuit against Boar’s Head in August over claims the company failed to warn consumers about the possibility of listeria contamination.
