Update:

  • Boar’s Head expanded its liverwurst and deli meat recall to include all items produced at its facility in Jarratt, Virginia.
  • Boar’s Head says it decided to expand the recall after the USDA informed it that its Strassburger Brand Liverwurst had been linked to an ongoing nationwide outbreak of listeria monocytogenes in deli meat.
  • Boar’s Head says the decision to expand the recall was made out of an abundance of caution and it will be pausing its ready-to-eat operations at the Jarratt facility until further notice.
  • The expanded recall involves a number of products purchased before July 31, including different types of ham, sausage, bacon, bologna, and pork and beef frankfurters.
  • The deli meat listeria outbreak is currently linked to illnesses—including two deaths—in 12 U.S. states.

The U.S. Centers for Disease Control has linked an ongoing listeria outbreak to deli meat. The outbreak has been confirmed to have sickened individuals in 12 states and caused two deaths.

In total, the listeria outbreak is linked to a total of 28 illnesses and 28 hospitalizations, in addition to the two deaths, according to the CDC

States that have reported illness linked to the outbreak include Minnesota, Wisconsin, Missouri, Illinois, Pennsylvania, New York, Massachusetts, New Jersey, Maryland, Virginia, North Carolina and Georgia.

The CDC said “many” individuals affected by the listeria outbreak reported eating meat they had sliced at deli counters and that its investigators are currently working to determine what specific products may be contaminated.

“Products sold at the deli, especially those sliced or prepared at the deli, can be contaminated with Listeria,” the agency said.

CDC warns consumers not to eat meats sliced at deli counters without reheating them

The CDC is warning consumers not to eat meats that were sliced at deli counters unless they are reheated to an internal temperature of 165 degrees Fahrenheit.

Consumers are also advised to clean their refrigerators and any other containers or surfaces that may have touched sliced deli meats.

According to the CDC, the true number of individuals who have been sickened is likely higher and more widespread than what is currently being reported. It usually takes three to four weeks to determine if a sick individual is part of an outbreak.

In other news involving listeria, Weirs Farm issued a recall for dozens of fruits and vegetables earlier this month over concerns they may be contaminated with Listeria monocytogenes. The recalled produce was sold at Walmart, Kroger and other supermarkets in 13 states.

I purchase Boar’s Head at Smith’s all of the time. I can’t afford to be sicker than I already am. Perhaps this could contribute to my failing health.
