The U.S. Centers for Disease Control and Prevention is investigating a multistate outbreak of several strains of salmonella linked to cucumbers.ย

The CDC, which is being aided in the investigation by public health and regulatory officials in several states and the U.S. Food and Drug Administration, said 449 people across 31 states have been infected with Salmonella Africana or Salmonella Braenderup, as of July 2.ย

The sicknesses have led to a total of 125 hospitalizations, according to the CDC, which said the illnesses started on dates ranging from March 11, 2024, to June 4, 2024.ย

The salmonella outbreak was traced to cucumbers using Epidemiologic, traceback and laboratory data, according to the CDC.ย

True number of individuals sickened by salmonella outbreak likely higher than reported, CDC saysย

The CDC said the true number of individuals sickened from the cucumber salmonella outbreak is โ€œlikely much higher,โ€ than the currently reported number, and that it may not be contained to the current states where an illness has been reported.ย

โ€œThis is because many people recover without medical care and are not tested for Salmonella,โ€ the CDC said.

While not responsible for the entirety of the outbreak, FDA data and epidemiologic information traced cucumbers from Bedner Growers, Inc., of Boynton Beach, Florida and Thomas Produce Company, of Boca Raton, Florida, as likely sources of the illnesses, according to the CDC.ย

Fresh Start Produce Sales Inc. issued a recall for its whole cucumbers at the beginning of June over concerns they may have been contaminated with salmonella.ย
