Closing out a decades-old computer financing scheme, the Federal Trade Commission (FTC) has reportedly sent $103,000 worth of checks to more than 4,500 consumers who paid Blue Hippo excessive prices for computers that, in some cases, they never received.
The company collected the high-prices through installment payments for new computers dating back to the early-2000s, back when home computers were the primary way to access the internet, Consumer Affairs reports.
In 2008, the FTC charged Blue Hippo with promising to finance the excessively priced new computers, but failing to deliver them to the consumers. It also said that Blue Hippo did not give consumers key details of the company’s refund policy until after they had begun payments.
Consumer Affairs found in 2007 that Walmart’s laptop and printer could be purchased together for $571 at the time, but on Blue Hippo a slower laptop package carried a price tag of up to $2,698 — almost five times the cost of Wal-Mart’s offering.
Blue Hippo agreed to settle with the FTC, but the company continued its shady practices and in 2009 the FTC sued again charging the company and owner and CEO Joseph Rensin with contempt for violating the 2008 order.
Blue Hippo Refund Checks Sent to Victims
The FTC came out victorious after a long court battle and distributed the more than $103,000 it won in refund checks to consumers. The agency has the names and addresses of consumers who are eligible for a refund and has said people who receive checks should deposit or cash them within 90 days.
Consumers who have questions about their checks can call the refund administrator Analytics, Inc, or contact the FTC.

Years ago, I paid Bluehippo money for at least a year and never recieved anything. Am I entitled to getting my money back since there was a lawsuit against them.
The first time I spent $75 then a few months later they withdrew $200 from my paycheck. I was trying to buy a computer from blue hippo but never received it. When I called them they said you’re supposed to make the full payment before they send the computer. This is in 2009 that this happened. I have never seen a check back from this lawsuit.
I made payments for a full computer & I think it came with a printer. I, unfortunately, mad ALL of my payments, paid in full, about #1200.00 but never got my computer or printer. I must have called a thousand times, but either didn’t get a response, or got a recording, or a person kept giving me the runaround. I was So Upset, cause I was going through a vicious divorce at the time, & really was looking forward to it for my kids. Money was so very tight at the time, being a newly divorced man, with 2 young kids.
I really Hope I can get at least some of my money back. I Struggled Really Hard Back at the Time This Idiot & His Stupid Company Ripped me & hundreds of other people who, at the time, really couldn’t afford to get ripped off. And, as I said, I paid off my entire bill, $1200 is what I believe I spent.
Hopefully, I will hear back from someone at the FTC, or someone affiliated with them and/or this case.
Same here i got the districts attorney office of Rhode island envolved and then they tried to reimburse me by sending me couple of 150 calling cards lol that was hilarious
I paid for years ,for a computer for my kids ,never received it.
Well I was a victim as well I can’t remember the exact amount they got from me but it was allot to me I believe it was about 600 dollars. I would love to get my money back!!
I got scammed out of $800 spent hours on the phone. Called over 40 some time. This is the first time hearing about the suit. I had no clue it even happened. Hell, is still have a copy of the original contract and receipts for all payments made, and log will names and dates. Too bad I didn’t know about this.
