Cracked MacBook Screens Overview:

  • Who: Consumers are reportedly considering class action litigation against Apple Inc.
  • Why: Complaints about the retina display screens on Apple’s M1 MacBook Pro and M1 MacBook Air cracking have mounted. Apple has paid for some repairs, but other consumers say they were forced to cover the costs of the alleged defect.
  • Where: Consumers claim the problem is nationwide.

Apple Inc. may soon face class action over consumer allegations that the retina screens on its M1 MacBook Pro and M1 MacBook Air laptops are vulnerable to cracking on their own.

Consumers have posted discussion threads on both Reddit and Apple Support Communities, claiming their MacBook laptop screens developed cracks without incident.

Complaints of Cracked MacBook Screens Mount

Many of those who allege their MacBook screens cracked for no reason say they discovered the damage after opening their laptops normally from a closed position, or by simply shifting the viewing angle, according to 9to5Mac

Apple has denied liability in most cases, according to 9to5Mac, insisting that the reason for the damage to the MacBook screens are likely caused by a small piece of debris getting trapped between the screen and keyboard.

Users reportedly suspect the device simply wasn’t made sturdy enough, and they claim they must spend upwards of $600 to fix the cracked MacBook screen, with little assurance that the damage won’t suddenly reoccur.

A class action lawsuit was filed against Apple back in 2014 that alleged the company failed to fix graphical issues and system failures in its 2011 MacBook Pro laptops

Apple was also in the news earlier this month after privacy concerns led it to drop plans to roll out new software meant to detect sexually explicit material on children’s phones.

The Retina screen on my 13 month old MacBook Air M1 cracked after just opening it up. It sits on my desk in my home office and has not been subjected any physical shocks whatsoever.
I have owned Apple devices for decades without any problems but this one is apparently not designed or manufactured to the high standards of the other devices. Apple needs to compensate owners of these MacBooks since the cost to repair is about 67% of the new cost.

I am facing the same issue in India, after I replaced the broken of my Mac book pro late 2017 15inch mode with touchbar. It has developed a crack on normal usage. It happened right after the 90 days replacement warranty. This is not a warranty issue but clearly a quality and design flaw. I have been raising this issues with customer support but their only resolution is suggesting me to get the screen replaced again by paying a full replacement cost. Extremely disappointed with apple for cheating their customers like this.

Hi, just this morning I opened my Macbook pro m1 and experienced the same issue where the screen had a crack with color lines from top to bottom on the left side and there was no prior incident before closing it and going to bed last night. I was in shock to see it when I opened it and started to research it to discover that this a common issue with this model. I bought the Macbook pro about 9 months ago brand new. I’m not sure what to do at this point..?!

My Mac Book Pro M1 cracked after normal use. I was told that Apple had not done due diligence with the new laptop and had received defective parts. Apple did not offer to repair or replace. This laptop needs to be recalled.
