phones with internal linear resistors

Several linear resistors manufacturers have agreed to pay a total of $50 million to resolve price-fixing class action lawsuit claims.

The settlement will benefit individuals who purchased linear resistors from resistor manufacturers (listed in the “Who’s Eligible” section below) between July 9, 2003 and Aug. 1, 2014.

Linear resistors are electrical components that, when placed in a circuit, regulate the flow of an electrical current. These components are commonly used in electronic devices including televisions, cell phones, and computers. In some devices, there may be hundreds of resistors used to complete the electric circuit.

A class action lawsuit against numerous companies including Panasonic, Kamaya Inc., Walsin Technology Corporation, and others, claimed that the linear resistor manufacturers conspired together to raise, fix, maintain, or stabilize the price of linear resistors in a way that increased their profits. Plaintiffs claimed that this alleged conspiracy violated the Sherman Antitrust Act.

Indirect purchasers, who did not purchase resistors directly from manufacturers, have also reached settlements with manufacturers. The indirect purchasers claim that they were forced to pay more for electronic devices that were equipped with overpriced linear resistors.

The recent direct purchaser settlement resolves claims against Kamaya Inc., Kamaya Electric Co. Ltd., Walsin Technology Corporation, Walsin Technology Corporation USA, Hokuriku Electric Industry Co. Ltd., HDK America Inc., Panasonic Corporation, Panasonic Corporation of North America, ROHM Co. Ltd., ROHM Semiconductor U.S.A. LLC, KOA Corporation, and KOA Speer Electronics Inc.

Under the settlement, Class Members will be able to recover monetary payment. The payment amount will depend on the dollar value of their approved resistor purchases. There are not estimates available for how much each Class Member will be able to collect.

In order to receive payment, Class Members must file a valid claim by Aug. 14, 2019. The deadline for exclusion and objection is July 15, 2019. The final approval hearing is scheduled for Sept. 5, 2019.
