AT&T data throttling FTC settlement

Consumers could benefit from a $60 million lawsuit settlement between the Federal Trade Commission (FTC) and AT&T resolving claims that the wireless provider engaged in data throttling — reducing the “unlimited” data speeds.

The settlement benefits former AT&T customers who had an unlimited data plan with the company at some point between Oct. 1, 2011, and June 30, 2015, who experienced data throttling and who have not received a bill credit or payment from AT&T regarding this matter.

According to the FTC, AT&T promised its customers “unlimited” data without qualification. In reality, the company allegedly throttled data speeds to the point that data was impossible to use.

AT&T is a mobile carrier that offers cellular and data services to customers.

In November 2019, AT&T agreed to resolve the FTC’s allegations with a $60 million lawsuit settlement. 

In 2020, AT&T distributed some funds to current and former customers who were affected by this issue. However, because AT&T was unable to reach every eligible customer, the FTC has opened the remaining $7 million of the settlement to provide partial refunds to consumers who haven’t received a refund from AT&T.

Refunds from the AT&T data-throttling lawsuit settlement will vary depending on a number of factors. No payment estimates are available at this time.

There is no deadline for exclusion or objection for this FTC settlement.

The settlement was finalized on Nov. 5, 2019.

In order to receive a refund, consumers must submit a valid claim form by May 18, 2023.
