Britax has come under fire for an alleged defect in their BOB jogger stroller.
According to customers, the BOB jogger stroller possessed a defect that caused its front wheel to suddenly fall off during normal use. Allegedly, this is because the “quick release” on the front wheel is prone to failure. Parents allegedly reported that some children had suffered serious injuries as a result of the defect.
In an attempt to remedy the problem, the company sent out replacement bolts for the strollers. Customers claimed that this did not fix the problem, and in fact, created new ones.
The new bolt was part of a settlement made with U.S. Consumer Product Safety Commission regulators — a settlement that meant Britax could avoid initiating a safety recall of the allegedly defective strollers. Reportedly, this settlement that allows Britax to provide replacement parts without initiating a recall was a contentious one, because it was approved 3 to 2 by Consumer Product Safety commissioners.
Allegedly, 17 models of the stroller are affected by the defect, including:
- Ironman
- Ironman Duallie
- Revolution
- Revolution CE
- Revolution Flex
- Revolution Flex Duallie
- Revolution Pro
- Revolution Pro Duallie
- Revolution SE
- Revolution SE Demo
- Revolution SE Duallie
- Revolution SE Duallie Plus
- Revolution SE Plus
- Sport Utility Stroller
- Stroller Strides
- Stroller Strides Duallie
- SUS Duallie
Consumer complaints led the Consumer Product Safety Commission (CPSC) to file a lawsuit against the maker of the BOB jogger stroller, Britax. This lawsuit resulted in a settlement that enabled Britax to avoid a recall. The settlement was met with disapproval by some parents and experts.
The solution in the settlement with the CPSC was reportedly for the company to provide replacement bolts that supposedly prevent the quick release from failing, as opposed to announcing a recall that would possibly eliminate the problem of further defects. However, some parents say that the new bolt fails, even breaking in two pieces in some cases. Parents were reportedly disturbed by the incidents.
The Washington Post reports that some of the commissioners in the Consumer Product Safety Commission expressed concern over the reports of replacement bolts breaking. According to the Washington Post, Commissioner Robert Adler, who voted against the settlement deal that was struck with the makers of the BOB jogging stroller, said “when you don’t call something a recall, this is what you get,” referring to the problems with what was supposed to have fixed the problems with the popular stroller.
Reportedly, the company has attempted to remedy the problem in the cases of consumers who reported problems with the new bolts, solutions which included picking up the defective parts, and sending a new stroller free of charge in exchange for the old stroller and defective bolt.
The BOB jogger stroller was popular among many parents, and many parents considered it trustworthy. The stroller gained popularity on social media and “Mommy blogs,” and was often highly recommended.
A number of news sources have covered the problems with the BOB stroller and have examined the controversial decision to not require a recall of the device.
