Baby bottle class action lawsuits overview:

  • Who: Consumers recently filed class action lawsuits against Newell Brands, Mayborn USA Inc., Philips North America LLC and Handi-Craft Company.
  • Why: The plaintiffs filed the class action lawsuits over claims the companies failed to disclose that their baby bottles can leach harmful microplastics.
  • Where: The class action lawsuits were filed in U.S. federal courts.

Consumers recently took aim at baby bottle manufacturers over claims their products can leach harmful microplastics, endangering the health of babies and young children.

The makers of Nuk, Tommee Tippee, Philips and Dr. Brown baby bottles are at the center of the class action lawsuits. Consumers claim the companies failed to disclose to consumers that their products can leach microplastics, and are thus not suitable for use.

Microplastics are created by the degradation of solid plastic and, according to the class action lawsuits, are particularly harmful to small children.

Nuk baby bottles leach microplastics when heated, class action claims

A consumer filed a class action lawsuit against Newell Brands earlier this month over claims the company’s Nuk baby bottles leach microplastics when heated.

The class action lawsuit argues Newell misleads consumers by representing that the Nuk baby bottles are BPA-free, when, in reality, they leach microplastics that can cause health risks.

“Before placing the products into the stream of commerce and into the hands of consumers to purchase and children to put in their mouths, defendant knew or should have known that the products contained harmful microplastics,” the Nuk class action says.

Class action says Tommee Tippee baby bottle maker misleads consumers about safety

A consumer filed a class action lawsuit against Mayborn USA Inc. this month over claims the company fails to disclose its Tommee Tippee baby bottles leach microplastics.

The class action lawsuit argues Mayborn misrepresents the Tommee Tippee baby bottles as being BPA-free and that Mayborn goes to considerable lengths to mislead consumers into thinking the bottles are safe to use.

“Defendant omits the products contain harmful microplastics, especially when heated – a material fact to plaintiff and all reasonable consumers – on the products’ labeling and marketing,” the Tommee Tippee class action says.

Philips misleads consumers by touting bottles as ‘No. 1 Bottle Brand,’ class action claims

A pair of consumers filed a class action lawsuit against Philips North America LLC last month over claims the company failed to inform consumers its Avent baby bottles can potentially leach microplastics when heated

The class action lawsuit argues Philips falsely represents to consumers that its baby bottles are safe to use by touting that they are the “No. 1 Bottle Brand.”

“(Philips) has, in effect, callously brought to life every parent’s worst nightmare: unknowingly exposing their children to harm with a product they reasonably believed was safe,” the Philips class action says.

Dr. Brown baby bottles, sippy cups leach microplastics, class action says

A pair of consumers filed a class action lawsuit against Handi-Craft Company last month over claims the company failed to disclose its Dr. Brown’s baby bottles and sippy cups leach microplastics.

The class action lawsuit argues Handi-Craft markets the Dr. Brown baby bottles and sippy cups as suitable for babies and young children despite leaching harmful microplastics into their food and drinks.

“This disregard for society’s most vulnerable members has placed the health and welfare of millions of children in jeopardy as well as duped consumers out of millions of dollars,” the Dr. Brown class action says.
