Jeep Cherokee recall overview:

  • Who: Chrysler issued a recall for 63,082 model year 2017-2019 Jeep Grand Cherokee vehicles.
  • Why: The recall was initiated over concerns the recalled Jeep Grand Cherokee vehicles could suffer a loss of drive power and/or park function, increasing the risk of a crash.
  • Where: The recall affects certain Jeep Grand Cherokee vehicle owners nationwide.

Chrysler issued a recall for more than 60,000 model year 2017-2019 Jeep Grand Cherokee vehicles over concerns they could suffer a loss of drive power and/or park function, increasing the risk of a crash or injury.

The recall involves certain model year 2017-2019 Jeep Grand Cherokee vehicles produced between Oct. 11, 2016, and Feb. 20, 2019.

Chrysler said it is concerned the recalled Jeep Grand Cherokee vehicles’ power transfer unit could become damaged and disengage the vehicles’ transmission and differential, leading to the aforementioned problems.

“A loss of drive power can increase the risk of a crash. A loss of park function can cause an unintended vehicle rollaway, which can increase the risk of a crash or injury,” the recall says.

Jeep Cherokee recall notification letters to be mailed next month

Chrysler said it is currently working on a remedy to fix the recall issue and that it expects to mail owner notification letters by Feb. 13, 2025.

Persons with more questions about the recall can contact Chrysler by phone at 1-800-853-1403 or the National Highway Traffic Safety Administration Vehicle Safety Hotline at 1-888-327-4236.

In other auto recall news, Stellantis issued a recall for nearly 80,000 Jeep Grand Cherokee and other Jeep vehicles in December over concerns the image on their rearview camera could fail to display.

  1. Debra Knepper says:

Hope this problem isnt on 2015 jeep Cherokee I have one .
Has alot of stuff on it.

  2. Kaity says:

My Jeep Cherokee is directly affected by this recall, and I’ve already experienced PTU failure that makes the vehicle unsafe to drive. Unfortunately, Stellantis and the dealership have refused to repair or replace the PTU, saying no remedy is available until November 2025. In the meantime, I’ve been told I need to pay thousands of dollars out of pocket for a rental car if I want transportation.

What’s most frustrating is that the official recall notice promises a PTU replacement under a warranty extension with unlimited years and mileage. To me, delaying that fix for months while owners are stranded or paying out of pocket feels like a clear failure to honor that warranty.

If anyone else is in the same position, I encourage you to file complaints with the NHTSA, FTC, BBB, and your state attorney general’s office so there’s more pressure on Stellantis to provide timely remedies.

  3. Sherese Patton says:

My 2017 Jeep Cherokee stopped disengaged while I was driving on February 27th due to the PTU failure. I have been calling and calling, and I have not received any help at all. All they keep saying is the remedy is not available. It’s been 6 months, there should be some sort of legal action we can take!

I was in a crash do to this defect! My jeep is a total loss and my air bags didn’t deploy! Jeep won’t even entertain my call.

  6. Ronald Francoeur says:

It has been 4 months with ‘fix under development’ and ‘parts unavailable’ status for my 2019 Jeep Cherokee Trailhawk. Is there legal action that can be taken to force Jeep to replace the vehicle since they cannot seem to or unwilling to fix the safety recall?

  7. Axel Rodriguez says:

My 2019 Cherokee Trailhawk has been unusable since 4/14, due to the PTU failure related to this recall (01C). Its been over 3 weeks with an open case and Jeep/Stellantis refuses to return calls or emails for rental assistance. I dont know what else to do.

  8. Nikki says:

On March 4th, 2025, I was stranded on a highway with my 3 and 6 year old grandchildren after PTU failed while traveling 65 mph. In 3 telephone conversations I was informed by the Jeep Dealership Service Department:
It was a confirmed recall issue with no remedy. I was advised it could be a week, a month or a year.
They really needed it out of the shop. I could pay for repair and later be reimbursed through recall.
There is a storage fee after 30 days.
Asked if I have considered doing a trade in, repairs will be more expensive.
I inquired if a loaner vehicle could be provided and was told if there is an active recall.
