Audi And Porsche Rear Axle Alignment Recall Overview:

  • Who: Audi and Porsche are recalling more 32,299 vehicles.
  • Why: A range of sedans, coupes and SUVs made by the two automakers risk having misaligned rear axles, which can lead to uneven tire wear.
  • Where: The recall is effective in the United States.

Audi is recalling 31,058 vehicles and Porsche is recalling 1,241 after the vehicles were found to be at risk of having misaligned rear axles, which can cause uneven tire wear and increase the risk of crashes.

In a recall notice posted by the National Highway Traffic Safety Administration, Volkswagen Group of America, Inc. says it is recalling certain 2019-2021 Audi A5 Sportback, RS5 Coupe, RS5 Sportback, S5 Sportback, 2020-2021 A4 Allroad, A4 Sedan, A5 Cabriolet, A5 Coupe, A6 Allroad, A6 Sedan, A7, A8, Q5, S4 Sedan, S5 Coupe, S5 Cabriolet, S6 Sedan, S7, S8, SQ5, 2021 Q5 Sportback, Q7, Q8, RS6 Avant, RS7, RSQ8, SQ5 Sportback, SQ7 and SQ8 vehicles due to the issue.

The company says the recall stems from a previous recall, 21V-295 (42L1), after which the rear axle alignment may not have been inspected.

“This may result in displacement in the wheel alignment,” the notice says. “The result could be premature and uneven wear of the tires leading to a decrease of traction.”

Punctured Tire Could Cause Loss of Control, Crash

Porsche says in a recall notice that it is recalling 1,241 2021-2022 Cayenne vehicles due to the issue. The company says the rear axle alignment may not have been inspected after the repairs for Recall 21V-271 (AMA9) were performed.

Both Audi and Porsche say that in cases where the tires are worn to the carcass, the issue could cause a puncture that could lead to a loss of tire pressure without warning, “potentially causing a loss of vehicle control and even a crash.”

Audi and Porsche both say drivers may notice a steering wheel misalignment when driving on a straight road or the vehicle pulling to one side when braking or accelerating. It added that the tread depth of the tires can be checked to assess even wear.

Neither of the automakers are aware of any accidents in the United States caused by the issue, the recall notices say.

Both say the suspension alignment for the rear axle will be checked and adjusted if necessary and tires will be checked for premature and uneven wear and replaced if necessary. Audi will offer a reimbursement plan under this recall but says all of its affected vehicles are still covered under the Porsche New Car Limited Warranty.

Audi says it will notify dealers and vehicle owners on March 25. Porsche says it will notify dealers on Feb. 9 and car owners on March 29.
