Mazda class action lawsuit overview:ย
- Who: Plaintiff Matt Cauller filed a class action lawsuit against Mazda Motor of America Inc. d/b/a Mazda North American Operations and Mazda Motor Corporation.ย
- Why: Cauller claims Mazda knowingly sold certain vehicles with a dangerous engine defect.ย
- Where: The class action lawsuit was filed in California federal court.ย
A new class action lawsuit alleges that Mazda knowingly exposed the purchasers of hundreds of thousands of vehicles to a dangerous engine defect.ย
Plaintiff Matt Caullerโs class action lawsuit claims Mazda failed to disclose that its SKYACTIV-G 2.5T engines equipped in certain of its model year 2018-2021 Mazda6, 2021-2024 Mazda3 and CX-30, 2016-2023 CX-9, 2019-2024 CX-5, and 2022-2024 CX-50 vehicles were defective.ย
Cauller says the alleged engine defect causes the engine to leak coolant, which causes the engine to overheat and leads to โcatastrophic engine failure.โย
โBecause of the Engine Defect, Mazdaโs advertising about the safety and dependability of the Class Vehicles is untrue and materially misleading,โ the Mazda class action says.ย
Cauller wants to represent a class of South Carolina consumers who purchased or leased in the state a class vehicle with a SKYACTIV-G 2.5T engine.ย
Mazda admits existence of engine defect, class action claimsย
Mazda has admitted to the existence of the engine defect via a series of technical service bulletins, yet has failed to warn consumers, extend the vehiclesโ warranty, or issue a recall, the Mazda class action alleges.ย
โMazda has long known of the Engine Defect. It has amassed years of research, data, and Engine Defect warranty claims,โ the Mazda class action claims.ย
Cauller claims Mazda is guilty of unjust enrichment and fraudulent omission and violating Southย Carolinaโs Unfair Trade Practices Act and state codes regarding breach of express warranty and breach of implied warranty of merchantability.ย
The plaintiff demands a jury trial and requests declaratory and injunctive relief and an award of actual and statutory damages for himself and all class members.ย
A group of consumers filed a separate class action lawsuit against Mazda earlier this year over claims the automaker sold certain vehicles equipped with defective infotainment systems.

I bought a 2024 CX-5, have 15K on it, & ZERO problems!
I have a 2017 mazda cx-9 head cracked months ago and mazda wouldnโt do a thing about it and now it sits because of the engine overheating. Not to mention the malfunction of the heated seats. Passenger seat got so hot burned a hole right through it and nothing they would do about it.
I purchase 2024 Mazda cx50 month ago and all ready have issues with the loud humming noise
I purchased a used 2023 Mazda CX-50 in spring of this year. I have had no issues to date but will look out for this. Luckily I bought an extended warranty since I know turbo engines can be problematic. Any information on what location under the hood to look for the coolant leak would be great. Thank you !
Mark you will see the leak with coolant/antifreeze. The problem is bad clamps. The article is stating that there is a bigger problem.
2017 Mazda CX-9 Skyactiv 2.5T, had to fight tooth and nail to get Mazda to replace my engine 5,000 mi out of warranty, after this exact thing happened to me. 15,000 miles after the repair was done my wiring harness melted down due to loose connections on the alternator, which Iโm sure was poor workmanship on their part when they did the engine swap. The melting harness also caused the passenger side seat warmer to heat up to the point of burning a hole into the seat and basically destroying the whole heating pad inside. They said it had nothing to do with the wiring harness melting and didnโt want to accept any responsibility, even though they happened at the exact same time. Very disappointed to say the least in the quality and the way this was handled.
I had a 2018 mazda cx5 I brought 2021 and sometimes it stalled.
I own a 2021 CX5 and often it sounds like something dragging under the hood. I donโt have an extended warranty and I pray nothing happens to my engine.
Bought 2021 mazda3 premium with 28000 miles in February and a 2023 cx30 turbo with 8000 miles in April both certified what should I do
Mazda CX-50, bought in September of 2023. They had to replace the differential after just 5k miles. No issues since though. Will go check the coolant level.
I have a 2018 mazda with a faulty 2.5 skyactive engine, dealership acknowledged the problem but wonโt fix it. Even though they have an internal issued bulletin that describes the same problem.
Hi
Just wanted to know if I purchased a mazda cx50 last July am I also affected ?
2018 CX5 bought new. Has acted strange since Iโve had it to this day. Replaced fuel pump engine still shaky and doesnโt respond like it should. 37k miles now.
