Mazda class action lawsuit overview:ย

  • Who: Plaintiff Matt Cauller filed a class action lawsuit against Mazda Motor of America Inc. d/b/a Mazda North American Operations and Mazda Motor Corporation.ย
  • Why: Cauller claims Mazda knowingly sold certain vehicles with a dangerous engine defect.ย
  • Where: The class action lawsuit was filed in California federal court.ย

A new class action lawsuit alleges that Mazda knowingly exposed the purchasers of hundreds of thousands of vehicles to a dangerous engine defect.ย

Plaintiff Matt Caullerโ€™s class action lawsuit claims Mazda failed to disclose that its SKYACTIV-G 2.5T engines equipped in certain of its model year 2018-2021 Mazda6, 2021-2024 Mazda3 and CX-30, 2016-2023 CX-9, 2019-2024 CX-5, and 2022-2024 CX-50 vehicles were defective.ย

Cauller says the alleged engine defect causes the engine to leak coolant, which causes the engine to overheat and leads to โ€œcatastrophic engine failure.โ€ย

โ€œBecause of the Engine Defect, Mazdaโ€™s advertising about the safety and dependability of the Class Vehicles is untrue and materially misleading,โ€ the Mazda class action says.ย

Cauller wants to represent a class of South Carolina consumers who purchased or leased in the state a class vehicle with a SKYACTIV-G 2.5T engine.ย

Mazda admits existence of engine defect, class action claimsย

Mazda has admitted to the existence of the engine defect via a series of technical service bulletins, yet has failed to warn consumers, extend the vehiclesโ€™ warranty, or issue a recall, the Mazda class action alleges.ย

โ€œMazda has long known of the Engine Defect. It has amassed years of research, data, and Engine Defect warranty claims,โ€ the Mazda class action claims.ย

Cauller claims Mazda is guilty of unjust enrichment and fraudulent omission and violating Southย  Carolinaโ€™s Unfair Trade Practices Act and state codes regarding breach of express warranty and breach of implied warranty of merchantability.ย

The plaintiff demands a jury trial and requests declaratory and injunctive relief and an award of actual and statutory damages for himself and all class members.ย

A group of consumers filed a separate class action lawsuit against Mazda earlier this year over claims the automaker sold certain vehicles equipped with defective infotainment systems.

The plaintiffs are represented by Timothy G. Blood, Paula R. Brown and Jennifer L. MacPherson of Blood Hurst & Oโ€™Reardon, LLP and W. Daniel โ€œDeeโ€ Miles, III, H. Clay Barnett, III, J. Mitch Williams, Dylan T. Martin and Trent H. Mann of Beasley, Allen, Crow, Methvin, Portis & Miles, P.C.ย

The Mazda class action lawsuit is Cauller, et al. v. Mazda Motor of America Inc., Case No. 8:24-cv-01807, in the U.S. District Court for the Central District of California.

  1. Mazda defender! says:

This is stupid, the coolant leak from certain failed cylinder heads was dealt with by mazda replacing the engines or heads as long as the vehicle fell under warranty during the claim. There is no safety hazard presented as the engine does not catastrophically fail during this leak, it goes into limp home mode and warns the consumer to visit the dealer as soon as possible. Furthermore if a consumers warranty has ended and they have not followed the maintenance schedule or brought the vehicle to a mazda dealer with a coolant leak during the warranty, in all fairness mazda shouldnt be responsible for the customers short comings. Americans and their lawsuits, what a joke!$$$$

    2018 cx9 with 68,000 no issues

  3. Ann,Gallo says:

MAZDA JUST SUCKS. CX6 with 30,000 mile had to get new alternator. Unheard of and mazda was Nasty. Will never buy a mazda again. It costs 1450 for a alternator. They are scammers and canโ€™t make a car that isnโ€™t faulty.

  4. Richard Baker says:

I previously owned a 2017 Mazda CX 9 with this issue. The dealer charged me over $6,500 for the repair. My $2,500 extended warranty plan also did not cover the cost.

  5. Deryl Cook says:

Bought a 2023 Mazda CX-5 18 months ago, have about 12,000 miles on it. No problems with the engine, do have a problem with the fans that cool the headlights. Those need to be replaced, am currently awaiting the dealer notifying me to bring the car back in.

  6. Mary Mc says:

2019 Mazda CX-5. Had to replace entire engine due to this defect.

  7. Alma says:

I own a Cx-30 2020. I took car to Mazda dealership for a check up. They came back with a list of all the things need to be done with a total of over $600.
Iโ€™m also leasing a CX-5 Preferred. I still havenโ€™t decided if I should finance at the end of the lease. Also on this car I had put a big down payment so my monthly payment are lower. I donโ€™t know if thatโ€™s an error or they just wanted my money. I feel like corporations are thieves.

  8. Alan Stratton says:

I have a 2019 Mazda6 GTR. All good so far, but I need to know of a recall if one happens.

  9. Xavier says:

Master Mazda technician here. Yes this is a real issue. Yes Mazda knows about it. However, this lawsuit is full of mistakes that will get it thrown out in court. Firstly, CX-50 came out as a 2023 model year, not 2022. Secondly, this issue only applies to Mazda6, CX-5, and CX-9 vehicles. Specially 2018-20, 2019-20, and 2016-20 respectively. No 2021+ vehicles are affected, according to the bulletin and my experience. Also no 7th gen Mazdas are affected (2019+ Mazda3, 2020+ CX-30, and 2023+ CX-50.)

  10. joel L Eskenas says:

I have a 2024 CX-5 signature model. I only have 9,000 miles on it and so far have not had any problems

    1. Markandan says:

I am having CX50 with 9000 miles and have had no problems so far
