Mazda class action lawsuit overview:ย
- Who: Plaintiff Matt Cauller filed a class action lawsuit against Mazda Motor of America Inc. d/b/a Mazda North American Operations and Mazda Motor Corporation.ย
- Why: Cauller claims Mazda knowingly sold certain vehicles with a dangerous engine defect.ย
- Where: The class action lawsuit was filed in California federal court.ย
A new class action lawsuit alleges that Mazda knowingly exposed the purchasers of hundreds of thousands of vehicles to a dangerous engine defect.ย
Plaintiff Matt Caullerโs class action lawsuit claims Mazda failed to disclose that its SKYACTIV-G 2.5T engines equipped in certain of its model year 2018-2021 Mazda6, 2021-2024 Mazda3 and CX-30, 2016-2023 CX-9, 2019-2024 CX-5, and 2022-2024 CX-50 vehicles were defective.ย
Cauller says the alleged engine defect causes the engine to leak coolant, which causes the engine to overheat and leads to โcatastrophic engine failure.โย
โBecause of the Engine Defect, Mazdaโs advertising about the safety and dependability of the Class Vehicles is untrue and materially misleading,โ the Mazda class action says.ย
Cauller wants to represent a class of South Carolina consumers who purchased or leased in the state a class vehicle with a SKYACTIV-G 2.5T engine.ย
Mazda admits existence of engine defect, class action claimsย
Mazda has admitted to the existence of the engine defect via a series of technical service bulletins, yet has failed to warn consumers, extend the vehiclesโ warranty, or issue a recall, the Mazda class action alleges.ย
โMazda has long known of the Engine Defect. It has amassed years of research, data, and Engine Defect warranty claims,โ the Mazda class action claims.ย
Cauller claims Mazda is guilty of unjust enrichment and fraudulent omission and violating Southย Carolinaโs Unfair Trade Practices Act and state codes regarding breach of express warranty and breach of implied warranty of merchantability.ย
The plaintiff demands a jury trial and requests declaratory and injunctive relief and an award of actual and statutory damages for himself and all class members.ย
A group of consumers filed a separate class action lawsuit against Mazda earlier this year over claims the automaker sold certain vehicles equipped with defective infotainment systems.

I purchased 2024 Mazda CX-50 SkyActive Turbo trim in February 2024. Iโve noticed unusual or seemingly abnormal engine sounds and functioning at start up. For example, the engine automatically revs to like 2 for a few seconds then settles at 1.
I think they all do that. Iโve noticed allot of the newer model vehicles including Toyota do this upon a cold start. I was told to wait until it Idles back down to Normal rpm before driving as itโs a warm up period for the convertor.
I have a 2020 CX 9, Iโve had to replace the transmission and I have to always check the fluids.
Considering purchase of a 2024 Mazda CX-30 Signature Plus with the 2.5T engine. Did Mazda address the issue for 2024 โ 2025 models?

I had to tow the car to dealership who charged me diagnostic fees and gave me the report that rod broke in the engine and it can happen sometimes and there is nothing can do.
Unfortunately my extended warranty expired just 20 days ago.
I had to get a used engine to keep my car running but had to pay about 7500.
I complained even to mazda US also thinking that dealership might have done something wrong but they also said that they cannot do anything.
Bought a 2021 Mazda6 Signature earlier this year and I thought I noticed some liquid on my garage floor. Car has about 18000 miles on it.
I purchased a used 2017 Mazda CX 9. It had a coolant leak at the turbocharger seals. Resulted in warping the head. Had to fix head gasket and turbocharger seal, over $4,000 to repair.
I own a 2023 Mazda Cx-5 with 30,000 miles, thought it off that it was half a quart low last week of antifreeze.
