Mazda class action lawsuit overview:ย

  • Who: Plaintiff Matt Cauller filed a class action lawsuit against Mazda Motor of America Inc. d/b/a Mazda North American Operations and Mazda Motor Corporation.ย
  • Why: Cauller claims Mazda knowingly sold certain vehicles with a dangerous engine defect.ย
  • Where: The class action lawsuit was filed in California federal court.ย

A new class action lawsuit alleges that Mazda knowingly exposed the purchasers of hundreds of thousands of vehicles to a dangerous engine defect.ย

Plaintiff Matt Caullerโ€™s class action lawsuit claims Mazda failed to disclose that its SKYACTIV-G 2.5T engines equipped in certain of its model year 2018-2021 Mazda6, 2021-2024 Mazda3 and CX-30, 2016-2023 CX-9, 2019-2024 CX-5, and 2022-2024 CX-50 vehicles were defective.ย

Cauller says the alleged engine defect causes the engine to leak coolant, which causes the engine to overheat and leads to โ€œcatastrophic engine failure.โ€ย

โ€œBecause of the Engine Defect, Mazdaโ€™s advertising about the safety and dependability of the Class Vehicles is untrue and materially misleading,โ€ the Mazda class action says.ย

Cauller wants to represent a class of South Carolina consumers who purchased or leased in the state a class vehicle with a SKYACTIV-G 2.5T engine.ย

Mazda admits existence of engine defect, class action claimsย

Mazda has admitted to the existence of the engine defect via a series of technical service bulletins, yet has failed to warn consumers, extend the vehiclesโ€™ warranty, or issue a recall, the Mazda class action alleges.ย

โ€œMazda has long known of the Engine Defect. It has amassed years of research, data, and Engine Defect warranty claims,โ€ the Mazda class action claims.ย

Cauller claims Mazda is guilty of unjust enrichment and fraudulent omission and violating Southย  Carolinaโ€™s Unfair Trade Practices Act and state codes regarding breach of express warranty and breach of implied warranty of merchantability.ย

The plaintiff demands a jury trial and requests declaratory and injunctive relief and an award of actual and statutory damages for himself and all class members.ย

A group of consumers filed a separate class action lawsuit against Mazda earlier this year over claims the automaker sold certain vehicles equipped with defective infotainment systems.

My 2020 CX-30 with 2.5 Skyactiv-g has not been listed, why would it be exempt ?

    1. John says:

Because itโ€™s not the turbo. The class action lawsuit is for the turbo version of the sky active engine. Itโ€™s indicated as 2.5T the T meaning turbo. The regular 2.5 is not on the lawsuit.

  7. Edgar Magana says:

I bought my 2019 Mazda CX-5 brand new and shortly after I got it sometime within the 1st year of purchase I began having issues with the engine burning through the oil too quickly. I would get engine malfunction and low oil reads even after getting oil changes done. The dealership claimed that they were going to take care of the issue everytime I brought it in and it was never resolved.

    1. Jody Allee says:

My low oil light came on when I still had 2500 until my next service. I had to add a quart of oil. Are you aware of the current class action suit regarding the valve stem seals?

    2. Justin watts says:

Same here, it says to change your oil every 7,500mi. But my oil light comes on at 5-6000mi. So now i just change it every 5000.

    3. Nerfherder says:

This class action suit is not related to your issues.
