Mazda class action lawsuit overview:ย
- Who: Plaintiff Matt Cauller filed a class action lawsuit against Mazda Motor of America Inc. d/b/a Mazda North American Operations and Mazda Motor Corporation.ย
- Why: Cauller claims Mazda knowingly sold certain vehicles with a dangerous engine defect.ย
- Where: The class action lawsuit was filed in California federal court.ย
A new class action lawsuit alleges that Mazda knowingly exposed the purchasers of hundreds of thousands of vehicles to a dangerous engine defect.ย
Plaintiff Matt Caullerโs class action lawsuit claims Mazda failed to disclose that its SKYACTIV-G 2.5T engines equipped in certain of its model year 2018-2021 Mazda6, 2021-2024 Mazda3 and CX-30, 2016-2023 CX-9, 2019-2024 CX-5, and 2022-2024 CX-50 vehicles were defective.ย
Cauller says the alleged engine defect causes the engine to leak coolant, which causes the engine to overheat and leads to โcatastrophic engine failure.โย
โBecause of the Engine Defect, Mazdaโs advertising about the safety and dependability of the Class Vehicles is untrue and materially misleading,โ the Mazda class action says.ย
Cauller wants to represent a class of South Carolina consumers who purchased or leased in the state a class vehicle with a SKYACTIV-G 2.5T engine.ย
Mazda admits existence of engine defect, class action claimsย
Mazda has admitted to the existence of the engine defect via a series of technical service bulletins, yet has failed to warn consumers, extend the vehiclesโ warranty, or issue a recall, the Mazda class action alleges.ย
โMazda has long known of the Engine Defect. It has amassed years of research, data, and Engine Defect warranty claims,โ the Mazda class action claims.ย
Cauller claims Mazda is guilty of unjust enrichment and fraudulent omission and violating Southย Carolinaโs Unfair Trade Practices Act and state codes regarding breach of express warranty and breach of implied warranty of merchantability.ย
The plaintiff demands a jury trial and requests declaratory and injunctive relief and an award of actual and statutory damages for himself and all class members.ย
A group of consumers filed a separate class action lawsuit against Mazda earlier this year over claims the automaker sold certain vehicles equipped with defective infotainment systems.

We purchased our used 2016 Mazda CX-9 in April 2024, so donโt know if this really applies to us. But on a recent long distance trip to Chicagoโs OโHare Airport, the vehicleโs temperature gauge flashed red. This occurred while my wife was driving overnight to the airport to pick me up after an arduous international journey. She was the driver and only passenger in the vehicle when the โengine overheatingโ light went off at approximately 9:00 at night. We had no idea that this was an identified issue with this vehicle. Our trust in the brand had been strong because weโd previously owned a 2010 Mazda 6 that had proven its worth with literally no issues in the 10 years that weโd owned it. So, when we purchased the 2016 Mazda Cx-9, it was almost simply by extension of the trust we had in the brand. We truly felt that these were outstandingly reliable vehicles. So when this vehicle almost left my wife stranded out in the middle of no where it came by complete surprise. To then learn that this was a previously identified issue that the dealer made absolutely no mention of was a COMPLETE breach of trust with the brand. On further inspection, weโve learned that we have the same issue that a lot of the other vehicle owners are experiencing with the 2.5 Turbo engine. A complete loss of coolant โ leading to almost catastrophic failure and circumstances. From the quotes weโve received so far, fixing this issue is likely a EXTREMELY expensive proposition. I hope Mazda will step in ad DO WHAT IS RIGHT by some of their long standing customers.
We have a 2021 CX9 with Skyactive G. Under 27k. We have had several issues while driving where the Infotainment system blacks out for a period of time. Additionally, on one occasion we had the power go down to a minimal mode. We donโt drive it a lot and we do service it regularly and have had 1 recall addressed related to software. We follow the servicing recomendations via the dealer based on mileage driven. It has been a good drive 99 percent of the time, however, with all the known issues and the few small issues we have experienced, it is a concern that should involve Mazda notifications for recalls.
My 2018 CX-9 signature just had this happen a few days ago. Air condition stopped suddenly, I pulled over and the overheat light was flashing. Got it to the garage and the head gasket blew. At least a $4000 repair.
Purchased 2021 mazda cx9 grand touring 21k miles. Infotainment stops working and I have to add oil often. Told the dealership they told me they fixed it and Iโm still adding oil to this car. This is really annoying and frustrating. Scares the crap out of my wife when she is driving at night and infotainment goes out. Also when the add oil light comes on.

Daughterโs 2017 CX-9 with less than 70k miles, overheated; she took it to our mechanic and he tested; thinks the coolant leaked into the engine.
Bought a 2014 Mazda CX 5 touring with the same motor. Has a light tick and on gas acceleration has a light stall then will pick up. The year model is not in law suit but needs to be added.
Purchased a Mazda 3 2022
