Mazda class action lawsuit overview:ย
- Who: Plaintiff Matt Cauller filed a class action lawsuit against Mazda Motor of America Inc. d/b/a Mazda North American Operations and Mazda Motor Corporation.ย
- Why: Cauller claims Mazda knowingly sold certain vehicles with a dangerous engine defect.ย
- Where: The class action lawsuit was filed in California federal court.ย
A new class action lawsuit alleges that Mazda knowingly exposed the purchasers of hundreds of thousands of vehicles to a dangerous engine defect.ย
Plaintiff Matt Caullerโs class action lawsuit claims Mazda failed to disclose that its SKYACTIV-G 2.5T engines equipped in certain of its model year 2018-2021 Mazda6, 2021-2024 Mazda3 and CX-30, 2016-2023 CX-9, 2019-2024 CX-5, and 2022-2024 CX-50 vehicles were defective.ย
Cauller says the alleged engine defect causes the engine to leak coolant, which causes the engine to overheat and leads to โcatastrophic engine failure.โย
โBecause of the Engine Defect, Mazdaโs advertising about the safety and dependability of the Class Vehicles is untrue and materially misleading,โ the Mazda class action says.ย
Cauller wants to represent a class of South Carolina consumers who purchased or leased in the state a class vehicle with a SKYACTIV-G 2.5T engine.ย
Mazda admits existence of engine defect, class action claimsย
Mazda has admitted to the existence of the engine defect via a series of technical service bulletins, yet has failed to warn consumers, extend the vehiclesโ warranty, or issue a recall, the Mazda class action alleges.ย
โMazda has long known of the Engine Defect. It has amassed years of research, data, and Engine Defect warranty claims,โ the Mazda class action claims.ย
Cauller claims Mazda is guilty of unjust enrichment and fraudulent omission and violating Southย Carolinaโs Unfair Trade Practices Act and state codes regarding breach of express warranty and breach of implied warranty of merchantability.ย
The plaintiff demands a jury trial and requests declaratory and injunctive relief and an award of actual and statutory damages for himself and all class members.ย
A group of consumers filed a separate class action lawsuit against Mazda earlier this year over claims the automaker sold certain vehicles equipped with defective infotainment systems.

520 thoughts onMazda class action claims thousands of vehicles have engine defect
I own 2017 Mazda CX9 with a SKYACTIV-G 2.5T engine and Iโm constantly stressed in expectation of the engine failure.
I just purchased a brand new CX five less than a week ago and my engine coolant light keeps coming on not certain what I should be doing going forwardโฆ.
Leased a CX-30 in July. The other day the push button wouldnโt start the car. I had to try 6 times before it started. Iโm also having a really bad time trying to use the entertainment system. Is this related?
I am currently making payments on a 2016 Mazda 6 tht I purchased on 2022. I have noticed that I now smell coolant and the traction light comes on and the car will not move. I have the SKYACTIVE 2.5 ENGINE. I will check further n see if it has the T on the engine.
I just purchased a 2024 CX-5. I bought it because my 2017 Lincoln MKC had the coolant leaking into the engine problem the same as stated here. How are car companies all having the same issue?
i have a 2019 cx5 that has been back to the gatsge nultiple times for engine, transmission and brake sensor issues,i will never buy another mazda
There are a lot of reported issues on Reddit, carcomplaints.com, etc.. the issue seems to happen mostly after the power train warranty has expired. I follow the CX-9 posts, sinceiown a 2018 model.
I currently own a 2023 Mazda CX-30
Good luck to you.
I have a 2024 CX5 I bought 2 months ago. Several issues including undercarriage vibration/noise, loud engine, speaker cutting out, transmission slipping, and outrageously sensitive paint finish. Iโve taken back to dealer who state they cannot duplicate service problems and quoted me $2600 for an inch long scratch- that should never have scratched so severely on the first place. I have other scuffs as well and Iโve been incredibly careful as itโs my first ever brand new vehicle. This finish will depreciate my vehicle in value significantly and continuously. Iโm terrified for anything to touch it. I donโt know what to doโฆ.
Mazda tech here, sounds like this is talking about a part called the coolant control valve which does exactly what the name implies. It is a known issue at least within the shop.
