Mazda class action lawsuit overview:ย

  • Who: Plaintiff Matt Cauller filed a class action lawsuit against Mazda Motor of America Inc. d/b/a Mazda North American Operations and Mazda Motor Corporation.ย
  • Why: Cauller claims Mazda knowingly sold certain vehicles with a dangerous engine defect.ย
  • Where: The class action lawsuit was filed in California federal court.ย

A new class action lawsuit alleges that Mazda knowingly exposed the purchasers of hundreds of thousands of vehicles to a dangerous engine defect.ย

Plaintiff Matt Caullerโ€™s class action lawsuit claims Mazda failed to disclose that its SKYACTIV-G 2.5T engines equipped in certain of its model year 2018-2021 Mazda6, 2021-2024 Mazda3 and CX-30, 2016-2023 CX-9, 2019-2024 CX-5, and 2022-2024 CX-50 vehicles were defective.ย

Cauller says the alleged engine defect causes the engine to leak coolant, which causes the engine to overheat and leads to โ€œcatastrophic engine failure.โ€ย

โ€œBecause of the Engine Defect, Mazdaโ€™s advertising about the safety and dependability of the Class Vehicles is untrue and materially misleading,โ€ the Mazda class action says.ย

Cauller wants to represent a class of South Carolina consumers who purchased or leased in the state a class vehicle with a SKYACTIV-G 2.5T engine.ย

Mazda admits existence of engine defect, class action claimsย

Mazda has admitted to the existence of the engine defect via a series of technical service bulletins, yet has failed to warn consumers, extend the vehiclesโ€™ warranty, or issue a recall, the Mazda class action alleges.ย

โ€œMazda has long known of the Engine Defect. It has amassed years of research, data, and Engine Defect warranty claims,โ€ the Mazda class action claims.ย

Cauller claims Mazda is guilty of unjust enrichment and fraudulent omission and violating Southย  Carolinaโ€™s Unfair Trade Practices Act and state codes regarding breach of express warranty and breach of implied warranty of merchantability.ย

The plaintiff demands a jury trial and requests declaratory and injunctive relief and an award of actual and statutory damages for himself and all class members.ย

A group of consumers filed a separate class action lawsuit against Mazda earlier this year over claims the automaker sold certain vehicles equipped with defective infotainment systems.

The Mazda class action lawsuit is Cauller, et al. v. Mazda Motor of America Inc., Case No. 8:24-cv-01807, in the U.S. District Court for the Central District of California.

  1. John hornung says:

I have a 2023 cx50 2.5 Turbo what is next to do with the car?

  2. Erinn says:

Funny, I ended up with a new engine, because it kept misfiring. I know they replaced, but then all the little issues for putting the old parts back into the car. So I also ended up with a new coolant thermostat because it wasnโ€™t working, and also they didnโ€™t flush the system so I had issues with the hoses. I was in a loaner for close to 4 weeks out of 6 weeks and had to keep getting the car towed. This now makes so much more sense when I read this. I have a CX5 Turbo 2022.

  3. Terry says:

    I have a CX 30. What do I do?

  4. Dominic Spillane says:

Most all Mazda 2.2 skyactive diesel engines Ireland have blown and had to be replaced with no admission from Mazda.

  5. Warren A Smith says:

I leased a 2023 Mazda CX30 with said engine December 2023. Nothing was said or alluded to about concerns of engine malfunction. What are next steps and how concerned should I be.
    Looking forward to your reply,

I bought a 2020 cx-5. They sold these vehicles knowing
they had defected engines?? That freaks me out

  6. Kyra Jackson says:

2021 CX-9 GT. Just bought a few weeks ago. I had no idea ๐Ÿ˜ซ

    1. CTaylor says:

I feel like this is not addressing the real concern. Part of owning and operating a vehicle, is paying attention to maintenance and warnings. If the coolant or oil light comes on, pull over. That is a warning that if you proceed, itโ€™s going to fail. Does it makes a funny noise when you hit the brakes? Go get it checked out. These problems can be prevented even if there are defects and recalls. Just pay attention.

      1. Diane Fleury says:

I have a 2017 Mazda Skyactiv CX-5 all touring. I am wondering if I have any reason for just cause of this engine.

  7. Allan Owen says:

    2021 cx5 turbo
    How do we get involved

  8. Ken T. says:

This is the exact same issues that the previous 2008-2015 CX-9 had with the Ford cyclone engines with water pump leaking coolant into the engine (which my car died from). I donโ€™t that lawsuit went anywhere. Will this be the same scenario?

  9. Bonnie Chatterton says:

I have a 2023 Mazda 3 with the same engine as stated in the lawsuit.

    1. Brenda says:

How to get with the class action I have a Mazda cuz-5 sky active

  10. Christopher Elliott says:

We on a 2022 CX-5 premier Plus and now Iโ€™m concerned about this defective engine based on your information
