Mazda class action lawsuit overview:ย

  • Who: Plaintiff Matt Cauller filed a class action lawsuit against Mazda Motor of America Inc. d/b/a Mazda North American Operations and Mazda Motor Corporation.ย
  • Why: Cauller claims Mazda knowingly sold certain vehicles with a dangerous engine defect.ย
  • Where: The class action lawsuit was filed in California federal court.ย

A new class action lawsuit alleges that Mazda knowingly exposed the purchasers of hundreds of thousands of vehicles to a dangerous engine defect.ย

Plaintiff Matt Caullerโ€™s class action lawsuit claims Mazda failed to disclose that its SKYACTIV-G 2.5T engines equipped in certain of its model year 2018-2021 Mazda6, 2021-2024 Mazda3 and CX-30, 2016-2023 CX-9, 2019-2024 CX-5, and 2022-2024 CX-50 vehicles were defective.ย

Cauller says the alleged engine defect causes the engine to leak coolant, which causes the engine to overheat and leads to โ€œcatastrophic engine failure.โ€ย

โ€œBecause of the Engine Defect, Mazdaโ€™s advertising about the safety and dependability of the Class Vehicles is untrue and materially misleading,โ€ the Mazda class action says.ย

Cauller wants to represent a class of South Carolina consumers who purchased or leased in the state a class vehicle with a SKYACTIV-G 2.5T engine.ย

Mazda admits existence of engine defect, class action claimsย

Mazda has admitted to the existence of the engine defect via a series of technical service bulletins, yet has failed to warn consumers, extend the vehiclesโ€™ warranty, or issue a recall, the Mazda class action alleges.ย

โ€œMazda has long known of the Engine Defect. It has amassed years of research, data, and Engine Defect warranty claims,โ€ the Mazda class action claims.ย

Cauller claims Mazda is guilty of unjust enrichment and fraudulent omission and violating Southย  Carolinaโ€™s Unfair Trade Practices Act and state codes regarding breach of express warranty and breach of implied warranty of merchantability.ย

The plaintiff demands a jury trial and requests declaratory and injunctive relief and an award of actual and statutory damages for himself and all class members.ย

A group of consumers filed a separate class action lawsuit against Mazda earlier this year over claims the automaker sold certain vehicles equipped with defective infotainment systems.

  1. Ali Laflamme says:

I had the exact issue with my engine in my 2019 CX-5. About 500 miles out of extended warranty, it started leaking coolant and the engine overheated. Had it towed to the dealership which has provided every service since the car was purchased, and they said I had to get a new engine. It cost be about $10,000 for the repair. Neither Mazda nor the dealership were willing to help (even though they acknowledged the โ€œdefectโ€). How do we get involved in this class action lawsuit?

Purchased a 2022 cx5 signiture turbo in Oct 2022, only has 2900 miles so far. Should I take action of any kind?

I drive the 2021 Mazda 6 with the skyactiv engine. Wasnโ€™t aware of a recall neither anything at the dealership too.

I have purchased a CX 30 year model is a 2023. It has the sky active engine in it. None of this was brought to my attention before purchasing the vehicle. I bought mine in October of 2023 but did not get my vehicle until November of 2023.

  6. Denise Rear says:

I own a 2019 cx5 that has suddenly overheated while I was driving it. Luckily I was able to pull off the road and let it cool down and then buy water, yes I said buy!, fill it back up and take it immediately to the dealer. They told me they couldnโ€™t find any leaks or reason why it happened. Just a fluck!
Hasnโ€™t happened since but now I wonder?

  7. Larry says:

    I own a 2020 Mazda6 and 2023 Mazda CX-30

  8. Juan Carlos Garcia Ruiz says:

I purchased a 2018 cx -5 sports . When i purchased the car we were able to dribe to the grand canyon and drive back to las vegas and only pump once 80 miles away from our destination on a full tank more than 600 miles on same day trip at 33/40 miles per gallon. Ever since the fuel injection has been replaced due to a recall i get less milage now at 25 per gallon and i cant evem make it back from a trip without having to pump again for the less miles than the gra d canyon trip . Now they say struts rear shocks need replacement for wear and tear when ive only driven the car 30k miles in less 4 years . Now my car smells like its leaking coolant after they replaced the fuel injection.

  9. Cory Gibbons says:

I have a 2019 CX-5 that has had oil leaks where there shouldnโ€™t have been. Also my infotainment center has many malfunctions.

  10. Kisha S. L says:

I have a 2018 Mazda CX-9 that is st the dealership here in Virginia as I type that is so because of engine overheating. Iโ€™d love additional information on how to make a claim regarding my concerns
