Mazda class action lawsuit overview:ย
- Who: Plaintiff Matt Cauller filed a class action lawsuit against Mazda Motor of America Inc. d/b/a Mazda North American Operations and Mazda Motor Corporation.ย
- Why: Cauller claims Mazda knowingly sold certain vehicles with a dangerous engine defect.ย
- Where: The class action lawsuit was filed in California federal court.ย
A new class action lawsuit alleges that Mazda knowingly exposed the purchasers of hundreds of thousands of vehicles to a dangerous engine defect.ย
Plaintiff Matt Caullerโs class action lawsuit claims Mazda failed to disclose that its SKYACTIV-G 2.5T engines equipped in certain of its model year 2018-2021 Mazda6, 2021-2024 Mazda3 and CX-30, 2016-2023 CX-9, 2019-2024 CX-5, and 2022-2024 CX-50 vehicles were defective.ย
Cauller says the alleged engine defect causes the engine to leak coolant, which causes the engine to overheat and leads to โcatastrophic engine failure.โย
โBecause of the Engine Defect, Mazdaโs advertising about the safety and dependability of the Class Vehicles is untrue and materially misleading,โ the Mazda class action says.ย
Cauller wants to represent a class of South Carolina consumers who purchased or leased in the state a class vehicle with a SKYACTIV-G 2.5T engine.ย
Mazda admits existence of engine defect, class action claimsย
Mazda has admitted to the existence of the engine defect via a series of technical service bulletins, yet has failed to warn consumers, extend the vehiclesโ warranty, or issue a recall, the Mazda class action alleges.ย
โMazda has long known of the Engine Defect. It has amassed years of research, data, and Engine Defect warranty claims,โ the Mazda class action claims.ย
Cauller claims Mazda is guilty of unjust enrichment and fraudulent omission and violating Southย Carolinaโs Unfair Trade Practices Act and state codes regarding breach of express warranty and breach of implied warranty of merchantability.ย
The plaintiff demands a jury trial and requests declaratory and injunctive relief and an award of actual and statutory damages for himself and all class members.ย
A group of consumers filed a separate class action lawsuit against Mazda earlier this year over claims the automaker sold certain vehicles equipped with defective infotainment systems.

I have a 2023 cx-30. I complained of overheating and weird noise from the engine right when I leased the car. Nothing was done about it. How can I get help?
I have a 2021 Mazda3 AWD Turbo and along with 2 Other Turbo Owners had defective radiator which cause the car to leak coolant. I took my car to the Dealer and they didnโt do anything about it. My 2 friends had it replaced under warranty. I knew there was a defect and wish I had this article sooner.

I have a 2020 cx5. Will it be ok
This is crazy. I literally JUST bought a 2024 Mazda3 Turbo Hatchback and I am planning on absolutely pampering it. I really hope this is something they can resolve soon.
2019 CX9, had this happen at about 70k miles after owning my car about a year. They tried to tell me it wasnโt covered under warranty, I didnโt take care of my car, it wasnโt serviced properly, etc. After doing research on this defect and proving I could find the manuals to fix it, providing my hard copy of warranty they couldnt find in their system, my service records for over 10 oil changes and services since having the car again only ONE year, complaints to mazda corporate, they fixed it. Had to pay around $1,000 for things they claimed were my responsibility even though they couldnโt explain what they were. Not only did they know about the problem, they did everything in their power to brush it under the rug and make me pay for their mistake. My car immediately over heated and immediately the engine failed, and was immediately unasable while I was driving my special needs kid around in 110 degree California heat.
Yes I have a recent 2018 Mazda 6 it leaked coolant from the engine and it was the whole cylinder head needed replaced over 5000 job
I am not surprised. There should be another class action lawsuit about the mileage commitment. The CX30 is committed for a 26 city/ 32 freeway/ 29 combined mileage. My CX30 doesnโt go above 22.5 maxโฆ measured over nearly 14 tanks of gas now. The โaverage milesโ indicator on car has never risen above 22.6. And yet, during service I was told by dealer that car gave them 40miles a gallon when driven (which is easily achieved for the 5 mile test drive by just driving without braking or on down sloping roads!
My 2024 Mazda cx-30 with 6k miles has no problem at 28.8 only because I started driving like an a-hole in sport mode that last couple of weeks. Before I was at 29.1. Maybe youโre just really bad at driving?
Did not hear anything

Yes. I purchased a 2021 CX-5 in January 2024 and I have already had to replace an engine part this month.
