Mazda class action lawsuit overview:ย
- Who: Plaintiff Matt Cauller filed a class action lawsuit against Mazda Motor of America Inc. d/b/a Mazda North American Operations and Mazda Motor Corporation.ย
- Why: Cauller claims Mazda knowingly sold certain vehicles with a dangerous engine defect.ย
- Where: The class action lawsuit was filed in California federal court.ย
A new class action lawsuit alleges that Mazda knowingly exposed the purchasers of hundreds of thousands of vehicles to a dangerous engine defect.ย
Plaintiff Matt Caullerโs class action lawsuit claims Mazda failed to disclose that its SKYACTIV-G 2.5T engines equipped in certain of its model year 2018-2021 Mazda6, 2021-2024 Mazda3 and CX-30, 2016-2023 CX-9, 2019-2024 CX-5, and 2022-2024 CX-50 vehicles were defective.ย
Cauller says the alleged engine defect causes the engine to leak coolant, which causes the engine to overheat and leads to โcatastrophic engine failure.โย
โBecause of the Engine Defect, Mazdaโs advertising about the safety and dependability of the Class Vehicles is untrue and materially misleading,โ the Mazda class action says.ย
Cauller wants to represent a class of South Carolina consumers who purchased or leased in the state a class vehicle with a SKYACTIV-G 2.5T engine.ย
Mazda admits existence of engine defect, class action claimsย
Mazda has admitted to the existence of the engine defect via a series of technical service bulletins, yet has failed to warn consumers, extend the vehiclesโ warranty, or issue a recall, the Mazda class action alleges.ย
โMazda has long known of the Engine Defect. It has amassed years of research, data, and Engine Defect warranty claims,โ the Mazda class action claims.ย
Cauller claims Mazda is guilty of unjust enrichment and fraudulent omission and violating Southย Carolinaโs Unfair Trade Practices Act and state codes regarding breach of express warranty and breach of implied warranty of merchantability.ย
The plaintiff demands a jury trial and requests declaratory and injunctive relief and an award of actual and statutory damages for himself and all class members.ย
A group of consumers filed a separate class action lawsuit against Mazda earlier this year over claims the automaker sold certain vehicles equipped with defective infotainment systems.

I own a 2020 CX5, thus for no known problems .
2020 Mazda CX-5 GTR 2.5 Turbo.
37k mi. So far, so good. Time will tell.
I just bought a 2023 CX 9 with 38,000 miles on it. I was told a week later it needed coolant because it was low. Did not think much about it but now I am worried.
I have a 2024 mazda cx-5
Currently with almost 12k. Have not noticed any issues so far.
Not exactly the same issue but very similar! Have a 2016 CX-5 with a 2.5 skyactiv and only 55,000 miles, and we just had to have an engine replacement due to a bad transaxle. Apparently there wasnโt enough complaints for a recall but they released a TSB for this KNOWN issue. 6,500 for a remanufactured engine. Hopefully yโall get taken care of.
What you just wrote doesnt make sense. The transaxle is another word for the transmission, why would your engine need to be changed because of that. Was this done at a dealer. Story sounds incomplete and fishy!
2019 CX5 2.5T awd, 80,000 miles. Not 1 issue. Most reliable car Iโve ever owned. I donโt see why it wouldnโt last another 5 years to 160k. Then itll be someone elses worry.
2023 cx 30. 2.5 turbo.. 5500 miles no issues to date
I own a 2018 Mazda 6 with the 2.5 engine.
2019 CX-5 2.5T Grand Touring Reserve coming to the end of its power train warranty. How can I gain protection to this irresponsible defect.
This defect is no irresponsible, it is just one of the many flaws of modern manufacturing, you dont know there is an issue until years later. This problem doesnt affect very many vehicles. Only cx9 and very little cx5. Mazda will cover parts usually after warranty runs out, unless you didnt follow service schedule with them.
I own 2022 mazda cx 5 turbo
2021 mazda cx5. Yes I have one. No problems yet.
Is there a recall list
There is no recall, this is not a safety issue. Stop worrying about it. Stick to your maint. Schedule with the dealer.
