Jaguar Land Rover Defective Turbochargers Class Action Lawsuit Overview
- Who: A group of Land Rover owners sued Jaguar Land Rover North America LLC.
- Why: The owners alleged their cars have defective turbochargers that Jaguar knew about. However, a judge ruled that the issue happened outside of the warranty period, and threw the case out.
- Where: New Jersey federal court.
Jaguar Land Rover has escaped a class action lawsuit filed against it by Land Rover owners whose turbochargers failed outside of warranty, and who accused the auto manufacturer of knowing the problem was going to happen.
In an order filed Nov. 19, New Jersey federal judge John Michael Vazquez dismissed the class action lawsuit filed by plaintiff Loretta Flynn-Murphy against Jaguar Land Rover North America LLC.
In his opinion, he said the plaintiffs—eight Land Rover owners whose turbochargers failed outside of the warranty period—had not sufficiently proven that Jaguar knew the turbochargers would fail.
The class action lawsuit was originally filed in Oct. 2020, alleging Jaguar knew that a component of its vehicles would eventually fail but did not disclose the defect to consumers.
The vehicles in question were the Land Rover Range Rover Evoque 2012-2017, Land Rover Discovery Sport 2015-2017 and Land Rover LR2 2013-2015. The plaintiffs say the turbochargers in all Class vehicles are defective.
The plaintiff claimed, after a few years, each of their vehicles experienced a turbocharger failure and most of them had to pay out of pocket to replace or repair the turbocharger. Two of the plaintiffs couldn’t afford to repair the defect, “so their vehicles are no longer fully functional,” according to legal filings.
The problem stemmed from Jaguar using lighter and less durable materials for the turbochargers than it did for a previous engine assembly, the lawsuit said. Due to these changes, the company allegedly knew or should have known that the turbochargers were “subject to premature and catastrophic failure.”
However, in last week’s ruling, Judge Vazquez said the lawsuit failed because the plaintiffs did not allege that their turbochargers failed within the time or mileage limits of any of the express warranties.
“Moreover, Plaintiffs do not plead that the turbocharger failure was inevitable or that it would occur in every car,” he said.
He added that the lawsuit fails to plausibly establish that Jaguar knew its engine was inherently defective.
Meanwhile, Jaguar Land Rover is facing another class action lawsuit alleging its 2017-2021 Range Rover Sport diesel vehicles contain a defective fuel system that decreases its performance if it is driven only on city streets.

2015 Evoque happened to me at 86k. Also mt coolant level always says it’s low and it’s not! I like the car but the performance is not up to par.
Our 2014 evoque always read at normal temperatures also. Turbo went out which caused the engine to give. We purchased used and 5 months later all this happens. We owe 11400 and mechanics quoted us 15000. We’re at a major loss.
2017 Discovery sport, turbocharger failed at 89,000 miles. I’m waiting on the estimate to repair.
I had turbo failure in 2016 Disco. Research showed repair is expensive and not permanent. Contacted Seeger and got a lot of feedback at first. Communication has dwindled to nothing. Filed a complaint with NHTSA with no response.. Gave up on car, complaint and suit after having the car parked for 18 months. Now happily and safely driving a Lexus.
Happened to me. Now my 2016 Discovery Sport has 0 trade in value. Repair is almost $7,000.
Happened to me! $6K to replace the turbocharger assembly
Same here 7k later now leaking oil after replaced the turbo and sprocket
This is happening to more people than they even know. It happened to me as well.
This also happened to me. 2017 Discovery Sport
