ford steering wheelA class action lawsuit claims that Ford F-150 trucks, model years 2015 to 2019, have defective steering systems which causes the wheel to pull to the left or the right, leaving the driver to temporarily lose control.

The Ford F-150 class action lawsuit was filed by Mark Lincoln who says that he noticed the steering problem upon purchasing a 2016 vehicle, and was told that he could bring it back for an alignment which would fix the problem.

Allegedly, Lincoln bought his vehicle back for an alignment on July 9, 2018, but that did not fix the problem. Additionally, he says that he had his tires rebalanced, but that did not solve the problem.

The Ford steering alignment class action goes on to state that after he experienced multiple problems with his 2016 Ford F-150, including “erratic steering and pulling,” Lincoln traded his 2016 vehicle in and purchased a 2017 Ford F-150 vehicle.

He says that he had to pay a $5,000 adjustment for the 2017  vehicle, which had around 27,188 miles on the odometer on the date of purchase.

The Ford F-150 class action lawsuit claims that when Lincoln purchased the 2017 vehicle, he reviewed the sticker that was placed on the window of the vehicle advertising the vehicle’s features, including equipment, warranty, and crash test ratings.

Allegedly, Lincoln relied on the advertisements on the sticker to make his purchasing decision, noting that the sticker did not disclose that the vehicle suffered from any defects.

According to Lincoln, when he drove the vehicle home, he noticed that it pulled and drifted in both directions. He says that Ford would do a re-alignment free of charge, but that the alignment did not correct the erratic steering.

In the fall, Lincoln complained again about the erratic steering, at which point Ford adjusted the alignment and steering gear assembly, and replaced the shaft seal. However, the problem allegedly persisted.

Lincoln claims that he brought both trucks in for service on multiple occasions but Ford failed to fix the problem. He says that he has faced financial injury trying to fix the problem, including incurring costs related to purchasing his new vehicle, and including lost wages because he had to miss work to try to deal with the vehicle problems.

He says that he and many other customers experienced the steering defect, and were financially injured because of it. Lincoln seeks damages on behalf of himself and all other similarly affected customers.

My 2015f 150 has the same steering problem turning the wheel to the left it is hard to recover back to center

  2. Dave says:

    2010 F150, 212,000 miles.

Driving at 5 mph on I 90 in traffic jam. Sudden catastrophic failure of steering column. Truck pulled to left and hit a car in next lane. Upper steering column bearing failure, significant steering wheel wobble without tires controlled. No power steering. I needed to “oversteer ” at the steering wheel to result in minimal change in tire direction.

If this had happened 1 hour earlier I would have been involved in a 70 mph roll-over surrounded by 40,000 lb. trucks!!!!

Same issue. 2016 f150. Started around 58xxx miles. Steering doesn’t want to correct after making turns. Also get the popping noise.

  4. Darcy Malone says:

i have replaced the steering system 3 months ago now im hearing noises again so it will only be a matter of time before it goes out again. I wont let my 17 yr old son drive my 2017 in case he looses power steering while driving

    2016 F150 XLT FX4
    Happens frequently….

    Steering fault
    Hill descent fault
    Traction control fault
    4×4 goes out
    Cruise goes out

Now the interesting part there are a number of ways to Tinker and make all the messages go away sometimes as simple as starting and turn off several times. To me this would seem as though there is something with a short in it creating a very dangerous situation because all of the things that go out could cause a very severe accident due to loss of control without human error.

Same issue with my 2016 F150 Lariat. Can anything be done about this?

  7. Brian Urbach says:

With electric steering, there could be any number of issues, internal corrosion causing issues with the ball nut assembly. The Nexteer system is a belt drive system that uses a ball nut. A number of issues within the ball nut could cause the issues noted. There could also be issues in the torque sensor, which causes the system to loose power and make it feel like assist is lost or locked up. Other issues in the electronics could also cause loose of assist. The torque sensor could also cause auto steer issues which cause the vehicle to turn on its own. While some of the dealer attempts at suspension adjustments might help, the major item to be reviewed should be the electric steering gear. The vehicles listed are Nexteer’s first generation steering gears which did have issues.

Yes I also have a 2016 f150 platinum that the electronic steering assist jerks really hard and over assists . Now my steering wheel has came loose from the shaft. What a joke . I’ve owned many Fords and have been satisfied but this one is wow .

  9. James Overman says:

I have the same electronic steering issues. This has been my nightmare for the last two years. This truck will not stay in alignment. I have a 2016 f150 lariat supercab 5.0. Built in canada. Recently the advance trac system keeps going of due to the rear end being damaged along with my tires due to this steering issue. I am forced to drive it to work daily and another of the time I’m afraid to have it on the road. My leaf springs now seem to be uneven and out of 5 places including a ford dealer, nobody can seem to find the issue. I just replaced the front differential with one out of a salvage yard. And the rear axle assembly seems to be bent. This truck has been ruined over this. I’ve gone through 4 sets of ball joints, 2 sets of upper control arms. 2 sets of struts,2 sets of inner and outer tie rods and replaced the lower control arms. Still no improvement. Last thing will be to replace the power steering rack, although, I think Ford should replace it. I have missed countless days of work and spend hundreds of hours under this thing. I never thought I’d say it but I’m about to become a Chevy owner.

  10. Eric Jones says:

Same issue 82000 miles. Now I hear a pop when I turn to the left started a while back but getting more frequent. 2018 F-150 XL
