ford steering wheelA class action lawsuit claims that Ford F-150 trucks, model years 2015 to 2019, have defective steering systems which causes the wheel to pull to the left or the right, leaving the driver to temporarily lose control.

The Ford F-150 class action lawsuit was filed by Mark Lincoln who says that he noticed the steering problem upon purchasing a 2016 vehicle, and was told that he could bring it back for an alignment which would fix the problem.

Allegedly, Lincoln bought his vehicle back for an alignment on July 9, 2018, but that did not fix the problem. Additionally, he says that he had his tires rebalanced, but that did not solve the problem.

The Ford steering alignment class action goes on to state that after he experienced multiple problems with his 2016 Ford F-150, including “erratic steering and pulling,” Lincoln traded his 2016 vehicle in and purchased a 2017 Ford F-150 vehicle.

He says that he had to pay a $5,000 adjustment for the 2017  vehicle, which had around 27,188 miles on the odometer on the date of purchase.

The Ford F-150 class action lawsuit claims that when Lincoln purchased the 2017 vehicle, he reviewed the sticker that was placed on the window of the vehicle advertising the vehicle’s features, including equipment, warranty, and crash test ratings.

Allegedly, Lincoln relied on the advertisements on the sticker to make his purchasing decision, noting that the sticker did not disclose that the vehicle suffered from any defects.

According to Lincoln, when he drove the vehicle home, he noticed that it pulled and drifted in both directions. He says that Ford would do a re-alignment free of charge, but that the alignment did not correct the erratic steering.

In the fall, Lincoln complained again about the erratic steering, at which point Ford adjusted the alignment and steering gear assembly, and replaced the shaft seal. However, the problem allegedly persisted.

Lincoln claims that he brought both trucks in for service on multiple occasions but Ford failed to fix the problem. He says that he has faced financial injury trying to fix the problem, including incurring costs related to purchasing his new vehicle, and including lost wages because he had to miss work to try to deal with the vehicle problems.

He says that he and many other customers experienced the steering defect, and were financially injured because of it. Lincoln seeks damages on behalf of himself and all other similarly affected customers.

I bought my teenage daughter a 2014 F150, and her power steering has gone out twice in the last 2 weeks. I have been quoted $3300 to fix it, that there is no recall available… but I can find online where there was a recall on 2014 F150s at one time… This is just very frustrating. She’s had it less than a year. I get that its older and used… but to find out that this has been a major issue in these trucks, and there is no extended warranty/recall to fix this issue is very concerning. It went out on her driving down the highway and her truck was trying to pull her into oncoming traffic, she was able to drive off the shoulder, avoided hitting a tree, and come to a stop. When she restarted her truck, it all went away and drove perfectly fine for a week and a half, and then did it again. Again, turn the truck off and back on.. no issue.

I’m having the drifting issue with my 2016 F150 2.6 Ecoboost. What can i do?

  6. Colin says:

Same experience as those mentioned above. At about one month ago with 39000 miles on the clock, my 2017 F150 started demonstrating this erratic and intermittent “sticky/heavy” steering. It comes and goes, but the drifting is near constant at this point. Ford required $250 just to look at it which is ridiculous. No codes or warning lights. This is frustrating and disappointing.

  7. Marcos Dias says:

Same problem 2016 f150 was fix under warranty twice and when it went out the third time the dealership blamed it on the truck being lowered yet they never mentioned it the first two time only after it was out of warranty.

  8. Scott Gaither says:

I purchased a 2017 Ford F-150 new in 2017 and have now 61,000+ miles on it now. Approximately 14,000 miles ago the steering became erratic while driving. Sometimes it works flawlessly and others it will be as if the steering wheel will lock into a left or right position, or stay in the left or right position after a turn forcing me to return it straight, or feel like I’m trying to turn in deep sand or gravel, and recently while driving along the interstate I’ve experienced the steering wheel become stiff and overly responsive to immediately slack and loose.

This occurs and yet I have not received any warning or failure lights. I’ve had a mechanic scan for stored fault codes with a Snap On Versus scanner only to find everything in normal operating range.

I’ve contacted my nearest Ford dealer twice in an attempt to get service. The first time, approximately July, 2021 I was told by the service writer that it would be 2 weeks before they could get my truck in for diagnoses but if it doesn’t have a service light on and the steering issue cannot be replicated consistently then they wouldn’t be able to do anything.

The second time, 10/4/21, I spoke with a different service writer and was told it would be 7-10 days before they’d be able to work it in to scan it. I asked if they’d test drive it with me when I brought it in and was told they don’t have time to do that and I should bring it in and if there is a problem the scan would find it. It was obvious he was only interested in getting off the phone so I didn’t bother asking if their magic scan tool would find mechanical problems too.

I called a different Ford dealership on 10.4.21 and was told by that service writer that they are taking appointments for service and the earliest available appointment time is the first week of November. I asked what the wait time was before service if I scheduled the appointment and was told it could be 5-7 days.

At this point I will continue to drive it until a code is thrown and service message is displayed or until the steering becomes entirely unusable. This problem has been reported by many Ford customers yet no solutions have been posted. I’d like to be included in any correspondence regarding this matter as I’d like to have it resolved.

Same issue but with 2016 F-250
Randomly jerks one way or the other then pulls to that side until shut off and restarted
    Dangerous and should be recalled

  10. Philip says:

I have a 2017 F-150 and I’ve had several occurrences with this issue. Extradited steering while going down the highway is quite terrifying. Has there been an update to this case?
