ford steering wheelA class action lawsuit claims that Ford F-150 trucks, model years 2015 to 2019, have defective steering systems which causes the wheel to pull to the left or the right, leaving the driver to temporarily lose control.

The Ford F-150 class action lawsuit was filed by Mark Lincoln who says that he noticed the steering problem upon purchasing a 2016 vehicle, and was told that he could bring it back for an alignment which would fix the problem.

Allegedly, Lincoln bought his vehicle back for an alignment on July 9, 2018, but that did not fix the problem. Additionally, he says that he had his tires rebalanced, but that did not solve the problem.

The Ford steering alignment class action goes on to state that after he experienced multiple problems with his 2016 Ford F-150, including “erratic steering and pulling,” Lincoln traded his 2016 vehicle in and purchased a 2017 Ford F-150 vehicle.

He says that he had to pay a $5,000 adjustment for the 2017  vehicle, which had around 27,188 miles on the odometer on the date of purchase.

The Ford F-150 class action lawsuit claims that when Lincoln purchased the 2017 vehicle, he reviewed the sticker that was placed on the window of the vehicle advertising the vehicle’s features, including equipment, warranty, and crash test ratings.

Allegedly, Lincoln relied on the advertisements on the sticker to make his purchasing decision, noting that the sticker did not disclose that the vehicle suffered from any defects.

According to Lincoln, when he drove the vehicle home, he noticed that it pulled and drifted in both directions. He says that Ford would do a re-alignment free of charge, but that the alignment did not correct the erratic steering.

In the fall, Lincoln complained again about the erratic steering, at which point Ford adjusted the alignment and steering gear assembly, and replaced the shaft seal. However, the problem allegedly persisted.

Lincoln claims that he brought both trucks in for service on multiple occasions but Ford failed to fix the problem. He says that he has faced financial injury trying to fix the problem, including incurring costs related to purchasing his new vehicle, and including lost wages because he had to miss work to try to deal with the vehicle problems.

He says that he and many other customers experienced the steering defect, and were financially injured because of it. Lincoln seeks damages on behalf of himself and all other similarly affected customers.

Have the exact problem on my 2017 Ford F-150. Total time in the shop so far 3 times for over 20 days. They have done alignment and that didn’t work. My Ford dealer has driven it many times and feels the issue but says they have no direction from Ford corporate on how to fix!! If this suit is still active I would be interested in joining!

My 2013 F-150 power steering module went out at 38000 miles. It was my understanding that the next year models had a recall for the same exact problem. It cost me $2600 dollars which I didn’t think was fair because it obviously is a poor engineering design. The power steering is an electronic module that can go bad and you cannot steer when it happens. Just hope you are not driving or you are in a safe place.

I though I was crazy but apparently not. While driving straight down the road my 2018 F-150 steers itself left then right. VERY DANGEROUS! Someone is eventually going to die in a wreck because of this problem.

2016 XLT sport 2.7 V6 95000 miles. Hit bump at 45.ph in slight turn, goes unstable. Not sure what is prob.

2020 f150 wanders pulls both left or right. Been back to dealer changed ujoint!! Nice try but definitely not a mechanical problem.

I have the same issue with a 2020 F150. Brought it back, they did a “shake” test and found nothing, Said they would send it up to Ford and wait for a response. I’m driving a messed up truck and just waiting for an accident to happen.

  6. Drew Gazaway says:

Just replaced steering rack on my 2016 f150. Only 78000 miles. Drove it one time and went out again. Cut engine off started truck back up and it worked ok. I’m scared to drive truck. Don’t know when it will do it again.

  7. Quentin Horting says:

I have this problem as well, 2017 f150 XL 2.7 v6 constantly redirecting the truck always pulling to the left or right. THIS IS NOT RIGHT FORD.

  8. JohnIL says:

Not every electric steering design does this, but the F150 does have what is called memory steering where if you steer right or left unless you steer it back to center it has a tendancy to keep steering towards last input. I have driven other cars with electric that have similar problems and people complain saying its out of alignment. Well no, the alignment is typically fine but the electric steering is definitely not like driving a hydraulic steering system which if operating correctly will more likely steer back to center. Personally, I don’t like electric steering but it has become very popular with automakers.

My 2018 F-150 with 37,000 miles pulls to left and also drifts right and left. Dealer repaired it satisfactorily March 2020 but the same symptoms have returned first week ofJanuary 2021.
NHTSA addressed this issue in 2018 in SSM 47701 and 47589, IDs 10152466 and 10148729.

I have an F-150 2018 4×4. I bought it used with 27k miles on it from a Ford dealership. It’s a lot of work to steer, taking constant adjustments to stay straight and in turns. I must look so quickly to check lanes it feels unsafe to drive.
