Update:

  • U.S. District Judge Judith E. Levy granted preliminary approval to a Fiat Chrysler class action settlement made to resolve claims it sold certain Jeep, Dodge, Chrysler, Ram and Fiat vehicles with an engine defect.
  • The plaintiffs claimed Fiat Chrysler sold vehicles with a design defect that caused their engines to burn off more oil than what would be normal.

Fiat Chrysler has been hit with a class action lawsuit by Jeep owners who claim the company’s cars contain an engine defect that causes them to consume an excessive amount of oil.

Plaintiffs Amber Wood, Ashley Schuchart, Karen Burke and Danielle Oates say their Jeep vehicles, which are equipped with a 2.4L Tigershark MultiAir Engine II, consume too much oil, causing the oil pressure to drop dangerously low before recommended oil changes.

The plaintiffs claim the oil consumption defect can cause the vehicles can shut down during normal operation, which places the driver at risk of serious injury.

Wood, a citizen of Illinois, alleges she purchased a 2018 Jeep Compass from Bettenhausen Chrysler Dodge Jeep RAM in Tinley Park, Illinois. She claims her vehicle is equipped with a defective 2.4L Tigershark Multi Air engine and fails to function safely, as advertised.

Wood says that, before she purchased the Fiat Chrysler vehicle, she reviewed the window sticker that was placed on the vehicle which advertised the car’s various features. She claims that she relied on the advertisements contained on the window sticker when deciding to purchase the vehicle.

The plaintiff says since purchasing the car, she has experienced excessive oil consumption and oil indicator lights persistently in the vehicle. While driving her car to work and making a left turn, the Fiat Chrysler vehicle shut off and would not move, she says.

Wood states she was finally able to get the car to start; once she got home, she called the dealership where she purchased the car.

She brought the vehicle to the dealership and was told the vehicle was sucking down oil and needed a new motor, the Fiat Chrysler class action lawsuit alleges.

The dealership then replaced the engine, but Woods argues the oil indicator light recently came on even though it was only 2,000 miles since her last oil change.

“FCA never told Plaintiff about the Oil Consumption or Oil Indicator defects, so Plaintiff purchased her Affected Vehicle on the reasonable, but mistaken, belief that her Affected Vehicle would be reliable and safe and would retain all of its operating characteristics throughout its useful life,” the Fiat Chrysler class action lawsuit goes on to say.

Wood explains she purposefully shopped for a Fiat Chrysler Jeep vehicle because she believed the advertising that went along with the car meant they were safe and reliable.

She states none of the advertisements disclosed there was a defect in with the engine and that Fiat Chrysler would refuse to repair the defects.

Wood says in the Fiat Chrysler class action lawsuit that, if the company had disclosed that her vehicle had the oil consumption and oil indicator defects, she would not have purchased the vehicle or would have paid less for it.

Other plaintiffs in the Fiat Chrysler class action lawsuit allegedly experienced similar issues due to an underlying defect affecting all of their vehicles.

The FCA class action lawsuit points to a March 2019 National Highway Traffic Safety Administration (NHTSA) complaint regarding a 2015 Jeep Cherokee which states that a dealership indicated that there is an oil consumption issue having to do with the pistons.

Another complaint to the NHTSA, lodged in 2020, states that an owner of a 2019 Jeep Cherokee required a new engine because the piston rings in the engine broke and scored the cylinder which led to the engine to consume too much oil.

“Because of the Oil Consumption defect, the Class Vehicles are prone to sudden and unexpected shut down, creating unsafe driving conditions when the vehicle stalls or shuts off without warning,” the Fiat Chrysler class action lawsuit argues.

The Fiat Chrysler class action lawsuit alleges that prior to 2013, consumers had complained that some of the vehicles in the class were not powered enough. In response, the larger yet defective 2.4L Tigershark MultiAir II Engine allegedly supplanted the older engines.

The Class vehicles that were equipped with the new defective engine are 2015-2016 Chrysler 200, 2013-2016 Dodge Dart, 2016-2020 Fiat 500X, 2017-2020 Fiat Toro, 2014-2020 Jeep Cherokee, 2017-2020 Jeep Compass, 2015-2020 Jeep Renegade and 2015-2020 Ram ProMaster City.

“Owners of these vehicles are terrified of sudden, unexpected engine stalls, and left empty-handed by FCA dealerships and technicians who continue to ignore this serious safety hazard,” counsel for the plaintiffs said in a statement.

“It’s only a matter of time before this defect leads to a fatality, with millions of affected vehicles sold by FCA on the road.”

The plaintiffs are represented by Steve W. Berman and Elaine T. Byszewski of Hagens, Berman, Sobol, & Shapiro; E. Powell Miller of the Miller Law Firm; and Jeffrey S. Goldenberg and Todd Naylor of Goldenberg Schneider LPA.

The Fiat Chrysler engine defect class action lawsuit is Amber Wood, et al. v. FCA US LLC, Case No. 2:20-cv-11054, in the U.S. District Court for the Eastern District of Michigan.

I have a 2018 Fiat 500X with a 2.4L Tigershark that has been burning through oil. I go less than 3000 miles between oil changes. What can I do to fix this??

  2. Tearanie Ingram says:

My 2015 chrysler 200 drinks oil, engine seems to be excessively noisy and making all kinds of ticking sounds, has been hesitant to start numerous times and the gas milage has just went down the drain completely! Please add me to the suit as well.

  3. William Hutfles says:

My 2018 Ram Promaster City Van has this engine and I received the W80 recall. I took it in for the recall in August 2021 when they initialized the 1500 mile oil check and they explained that the van’s computer was factory set to dry-fire one of the four cylinders about once every 4th time the firing order occurs. They think the dry piston is scoring the cylinder causing the oil consumption So they changed my van’s computer to squirt a little gas into that cylinder each time it dry-fires to help lubricte it. They told me they topped off my oil lo full on the dip stick and that I should return in 1500 miles for an oil check. A few days later after a couple of hours in church, I checked my oil in a flat parking lot. It was about 1/4 inch over full. I’ve been checking it regularly and the last couple of months it’s been near add. A week ago, in a flat parking lot, after about a 30 minute shutoff, I checked it and it was at add. I returned to the dealer today for the final oil check. They said it was just what Chrysler wanted to see, that it was OK and I could go. I read where to get a long block you had to check below the add line. At and below is pretty close. I see where they filled my oil back up to the full line on the dip stick today. My van used over a quart of oil in 1500 miles between last August and today and it only has 8900 miles on it. To me, that’s using a lot of oil. I see in the Amber Wood v.s. FCA Case #2:20-cv-11054, FCA agreed to a 7 yr 100,000 mi extended warranty. Does that apply to my 2018 RAM Promaster City Van?

How do I participate in this class action lawsuit as a owner of 2018 Fiat 500x dealing with the excessive oil consumption?

      Me too!!

I have a 2017 keep renegade and dealing with this

    1. disappointed says:

..me too. Had to have mine towed after it completely shut down, with out any warning what so ever, in the middle of a highway, with two 10 year old autistic children in the back. They went crazy as we sat there with cars wizzing by and i had to get out in traffic….mechanic said “thats just the way these(2.4 fiat) engines are, they burn oil”…Im having to add atleast 1qt. every 1,000 miles!!! What a peice of shizz! Why change the oil every 5k miles, when by then Id be dumping in 5qt.s anyway? I hate my renegade now. Im always stressed about it running out of oil. I hate saying that because Ive been a huge mopar fan for over 30 years and owned lots of old ones…but this thing is a huge disappointment.

    2. MK Battafarano says:

      1. Van Stoutt says:

2018 jeep renegade, has stalled twice due to no oil. Dealership is trying to skirt the issue and keeps wanting to restart oil test. How do I join the class action.

  6. Jane Brink says:

After feeling like I was held hostage by the Fiat dealership in Ft Worth, TX (I went in for a totally different) reason. Sent a letter to Fiat Chrysler of America and no acceptable response.
I have taken my car (2018 Fiat 500) to the dealer several times for several different things and still feel like we have a bad cari would NEVER recommend a Fiat to anyone. I have taken the car in for tires several times (less than 25,000 miles) until on day I had a blow out on a back road here in VA and it took 2 hours for a tow truck to tell me he couldn’t help because I didn’t have a spare or a Jack it had to be towed almost 20 miles.
Now I have the problem where the gear shift arbitrarily shifts out of drive while going down the road.
I don’t trust my car enough to go very far out of town. What if I get stuck again? I have a disabled son that requires a wheelchair and I don’t always take it with me!
This is the absolutely worse car I have ever owned and years ago I had a Pinto.

  7. Heather says:

    1. Megan Morales says:

I own a 2016 fiat 500x dealing with this now

      1. Savanna says:

I own a Chrysler 200 2015. It’s been a year that my car has been down with experienced mechanics telling me my car had a bad engine in it. Now having taken it to the dealership where I bought it. the dealership is now telling me it’s gonna be at least 6 grand to have it fixed out of my pocket! Meanwhile I’m still paying on this car that has been down almost a year. And forgetting to mention when my car engine failed I was driving down the main highway In town when suddenly everything in my car goes black and I lose all control over my car. Luckily my son was not with me but I did do damage to the side of my car do to the engine failure. This whole thing is a nightmare and I feel for all of you dealing with this. This was my first car I decided to buy and make payments on now is one of my biggest regrets! Very disappointed in this manufacturer not coming out with the truth causing so many more to be injured and without a vehicle!

  8. Antonio Villalon jr says:

I own 2018 Fiat 500x with 38,000 miles. Vehicle was bought in 2019 from North Star Dodge in San Antonio,Tx. Fiat 500x has been to service department several times since 2021. Service Depart add oil and we kept bring back to service department. Service department it is a procedure they must do. My wife has driven this vehicle and the vehicle has stop on her 3 times. Today 6 June 2022 500x stop while driving down our street. We can’t not go on road trip knowing this 500x could stop at any time while on the road and cause danger to us and other family members.

  9. Missy says:

I have a 2017 Fiat that I purchased new in 2018. The first time it shut off on me was 30 days after I purchased it. I had it towed to the shop and was told it was low on oil and that I should have checked it. Every time I got an oil change they would say it was low. I received the post card about the recall and took it to the dealership. I have had the oil consumption test done 3 times. This last time my engine light came on when I was leaving the dealership. They now say I need a new motor.

    1. JAIRO A LONDONO says:

Hi same thing happen to me the dealer do the tes and don’t pass
They say I need new engine..ok I waited for 2 weeks then they call and say the dealer decided is ok is normal my car shut down 2 times taking my dougther to school…

  10. Thomas Callin says:

I have a 2018 500X AWD with the same problems. I noticed on cold starts the car would stall several times before I could get it going. I took it the the dealer and they said there was no oil in the car. It had only been 3800 miles since the last oil change. I did notice a burning oil smell several times but I assumed it was the vehicle in front of me.
