The Florida attorney general recently secured a settlement to resolve claims that Dollar and Thrifty car rental companies charged undisclosed toll fees.
The settlement will benefit consumers who rented a vehicle from Dollar or Thrifty in Florida between Jan. 1, 2011 and Jan. 7, 2019.
In the car rental lawsuit, Dollar Thrifty Automotive Group Inc. was accused of failing to disclose fees to their car rental consumers. When renting from the companies, customers were allegedly not informed of all of the fee details, leading to unexpected charges.
In addition to actual toll charges, the company reportedly charged customers $15 fee per toll on cashless toll roads, totaling up to $105.
Consumers also complained about a PlatePass fee that charged renters $10.49 per day. PlatePass is a service that allows drivers to go through cashless tolls without penalties, but renters claim that Dollar and Thrifty misled them about the fees associated with the service.
“Companies owe it to their consumers to be upfront about all of their services and the prices and fees that accompany them,” said Ashley Moody, newly appointed attorney general for Florida and successor to Pam Bondi. “This case not only affected Floridians, but people visiting Florida from all over the country. I am hopeful that this settlement will provide relief to consumers harmed by the company’s actions and prevent future harm.”
Under the settlement, consumers can collect a full refund for the fees they were charged. Each consumer’s situation will determine the amount of compensation available.
Proof is required for payment from the settlement. Either the rental agreement number or information about where and when the rental was picked-up is required for all claims. Additionally, rentals than began before Nov. 1, 2013 require documentation of fees and payment.
Who’s Eligible
Individuals who rented a vehicle from Dollar or Thrifty in Florida between Jan. 1, 2011 and Jan. 7, 2019, and paid for a Pass24 or PlatePass or toll-related fees.
Potential Award
Up to $75 depending on individual circumstances and proof provided. A full refund may be available as well.
Proof of Purchase
Dollar/Thrifty rental agreement # OR city and state where vehicle was picked up and date on which rental began. Additional documentation is needed showing proof of PlatePass charges or payment of toll-related fees is necessary for rentals before Nov. 1, 2013.
