Ford has issued a recall of close to 1.5 million Ford F-150 pickups, along with Lincoln vehicles, over transmission issues that could result in drivers losing control of their vehicles.
According to Ford, F-150 pickups made between 2011 and 2013 have a six-speed automatic transmission that may cause the vehicle to downshift into first gear.
“Depending on vehicle speed, a downshift to first gear without warning could result in a loss of vehicle control, increasing the risk of a crash,” Ford said in a statement.
In order to avoid further possible harm to drivers, and to compensate drivers for their defective vehicles, Ford has issued a recall — one of three current recalls for the company.
In addition to Ford F-150 vehicles, other Ford manufactured vehicles are allegedly experiencing similar transmission issues.
Reportedly, Lincoln Continental vehicles made between the years of 2017 and 2019 have transmission issues, as well as some 2019 Ford Mustang, Lincoln Nautilus, and Lincoln Navigator vehicles.
Ford made the recall after five related accidents were reported, including one case of a person experiencing whiplash after a transmission issue.
The Ford recall involves 1.26 million F-150 trucks in the United States as well as 221,000 in Canada.
To deal with the issue, Ford has stated that they will update the powertrain control software present in affected vehicles, and will notify drivers of updates next month.
This isn’t the first time Ford has dealt with this issue. In 2016, the automotive company recalled vehicles over a similar transmission issues. The affected vehicles in the 2016 recall were 153,000 U.S. 2011-2015 Ford F-150, Ford Expedition, and Lincoln Navigator vehicles.
Despite the similarities between the most recent recall and the 2016 recall, a Ford spokeswoman stated that the root cause behind the malfunctions was different this time around.
In 2017, the National Highway Traffic Safety Administration investigated if the transmission recall should be expanded to include an additional 1.4 million vehicles produced between 2011-2013.
This investigation came after 123 complaints had been filed by consumers over the issue, and after two crashes had been reportedly linked to the problem. No injuries have been reported that were related to the alleged transmission defect.
In addition to the current recall that Ford has issued in response to the alleged problem with transmissions downshifting without a driver intending to downshift, Ford has issued two other recalls to deal with additional problems that have been reported with their vehicles.
Reportedly, some 2019 Ford Mustang, Lincoln Nautilus, and Lincoln Navigator vehicles have been recalled because some instrument panel cluster assemblies are blank when the vehicles are started.
Around 4,200 vehicles are being recalled for this issue. Ford reports that no accidents have been made in connection with this recall.
In a similar response to the transmission issues, Ford reports that dealers will update software that controls the instrument panels.
In another recall, 28,200 2017-2019 Lincoln Continental Vehicles in North America may possess door latches that do not engage.
This reportedly can occur due to a buildup of silicon contamination that could result from the door opening while the vehicle is being driven.

39 thoughts on1.48 Million Ford F-150 Pickups Recalled For Transmission Issues
I am having problems with my 2014 ford f150 and dealerships can’t or won’t help me. I even did the safety recall 24S37. It didn’t fix the problem. One dealership tells me my transmission is bad but they won’t help me even though I have warranty. Ford corporate doesn’t care and dismissed my complaint.
2014 ford raptor downshift crash, built 11/13. OSS failure, have video, ford refuses to help.

Have a 2013 f150 that falls under this recall. I did not have any issues at all with the transmission until a couple of months ago when it suddenly downshifted. Luckily at a low speed. I thought nothing else of it for the next month and a half. Now suddenly it will down shift there will be obvious computer issues (speedo goes to zero, shifts erratically, odometer reads dashes). Twice the downshift has been so abrupt and sudden that it has locked up my rear wheels and caused me to skid. Local ford dealer ignored me asking for the recall to be done and said i needed a whole new transmission. This seems wrong, unsafe, and illegal. I love my truck and I love the F150s but if there is a recall FIX it. Don’t tell me I need to spend $9000 on a transmission and refuse to do the recall!
I’m having the same problem with my 2013 Expedition. When I took it to the Ford Service Department, they diagnosed it as a transmission lead frame. Unfortunately they said my extended transmission warranty expired the day before I took it to the shop. I never received any notice by mail of this national safety transmission problem. Customer Service told me that it’s my responsibility to do an internet search every 6 months to check for recalls or issues with my vehicle. They not only refuse to pay for the lead frame but also the lead frame is on National backorder. My Expedition has been parked since December 27 because I cannot get the lead frame or the valve body. I’m scared to drive it because it’s so dangerous. They’re probably trying to replace your transmission because they can’t get the parts. I’ve driven Ford vehicles since 1976 but this will be my last.
My son in law has the same problems with his 2013 Navigator regarding the faulty lead frame. Ford and Lincoln are selling unsafe vehicles and they know it. Apparently the didn’t learn anything with the Pinto fiasco back in the 1970’s
I had a 2012 F150 platinum never an issue with it I had the recall done and two weeks later total failure almost 6k out of pocket ford told me an internal pump failed and burned up the transmission and ford does not cover damage caused by recall and Fords extended warranty denied the claim and stuck me with $1500 diagnostic fee what can the public do
My 2012 F150 down shifted from sixth gear to first gear. I got whip lashed from it and through my back out. I brought my truck to McMahon Ford in Norwalk, Connecticut on Main St. They are telling me that the lead frame is back ordered and my truck has been sitting there for 3 weeks.
What lawyer is handling these?Downshift to first in rain caused an accident today on highway in Texas in my 2014 f150 raptor could have killed me. Please call me someone 2144785057
Further investigation has revealed Dearborn Michigan trucks built until 10/28/13 are included, mine has a 11/13 build sticker. Those transmissions are built months before installation. Anyone know how old trannys are before install at factory? Ford is excluding defective trucks with a dangerous defect from recall.
Bought my 2013 F150 new. Downshifted unexpectedly a few times after rapid acceleration over last 9-years on the interstate. Had not experienced it during normal driving/towing. Around 2015? I started getting the recall letter. Ignored it until this November 2022. Brought my truck to Gateway Ford in Ponchatoula, LA for unrelated service and made a decision against my gut-instinct and had them do the flash recall program while they had it. Three days later driving down the road at 60mph a loud boom and jerk. The rear-end locked-up for a split second and the trans downshifted to first gear, wrench and check-engine light came on, truck went into limp mode–speed odometer went dead, airbag light came on. Pulled over to the shoulder, put in park, shut engine off and re-started. Everything went away truck acted normal. Got home, used a code reader and got code P0720. Started the research on the web. That is how I found out about the second letter that I never received about the lead frame defect and 150k 10-year warranty extension on that part. Called the dealer told them everything above and they immediately said it would be 2 to 3 months before I could schedule the warranty work because of tech shortages and supply shortages and even with that, no assurance that they would have the part. Rep said he had 6 other trucks there waiting on the part with the longest there for for over a month. Have 148k miles and 9-months left before warranty expiration and fault-code in memory.
Took my truck to a local repair shop. Had them service my transmission (new oil, filter, gasket), disconnect the three plugs to the lead frame, clean them, re-attach, and electrical tape (seal them). It’s been two weeks and have not had an issue yet–and screwed if I do.
I love my truck but when I dies, I will never, ever, ever, buy another ford product simply because of how this whole issue is being handled.
Same thing just happened to me had the recall done now it’s way worse am being told it’s out of warranty and will cast me 1100 to fix it when they get the parts in from back order I am a single mom who is also taking care of her elderly mom I don’t have the money to fix the problem they made!!! I also will never buy a Ford
How can i get in touch with you, mine wrecked same issue.
OK please I encourage any help I can get. I hat my 2011 F-150 reprogrammed. I never really had any problems with the downshift. I did happen a few times at lower speed. But I went ahead and had the reprogram done just to be safe. I did do the down shift thing a lot more then ever before but only for the first three days, and yes I did call then and even took it back to them. I was informed it had to relearn. Then about 4 months later my reverse went out, but not out just not know I was in reverse. I then took it to Ron Carter Ford in Alvin, Tx. The nest morning they called said it was ready for pickup. I asked what the problem was and told it was the Lead Frame. They replace the Lead Frame at no charge. I thought Great. Then 2 weeks later I get this downshift kick again, now I am thinking it needs reprogrammed. Took it in the next Monday morning, since that was late Friday night. Two days later I was told I need a new transmission, there was debris in the pan. I asked was this also covered, I was informed no it was not and the truck has 120 thousand miles, and this was caused by normal wear and tear. Let me tell you, two weeks earlier there was no debris in the pan, I even asked them if they checked everything out since they had the transmission open and was told everything looked great no other problems. now I have to replace my transmission. This is not just a coincidence.
I received the recall notification Wednesday evening after work, February 12. I made an appointment and brought my 2012 F-150 in for the reprogramming. When completed, I picked it up but the problem had not been resolved. It was slightly better, but still suddenly downshifting with no warning or way to predict when it would happen. Further, when I left work to go home the evening after the problem was supposed to be fixed, the transmission would not shift beyond first gear. I had to put the truck in manual shift in order to be able to drive it.
The following Saturday, February 15, I brought it to my local Ford dealership to have them further investigate it. They called me back to inform me that parts of my transmission were needing replacement at the cost of $600 to me. I argued that the recall notification I received stated that the repairs were free to the vehicle owner. The response was that since my truck was over 150,000 miles (I am currently 4,000 miles over), the repairs were not covered by the extended warranty.
To me, it feels as though Ford sat on this information and waited to notify the owners with the knowledge that F-150 owners like myself would probably go over the 150,000 mileage mark in that time. $600 to me is a lot of money, it is not a lot of money to Ford Motor Company. The right thing was not done here.
My truck had the downshifting problem. Brought it in after it was driving like trash. Picked the truck up and drove it 20 miles and the engine seized. Replaced the engine and turbos. Picked it up and drove it another 2 days and now the rear end needs replaced/rebuilt they said. Less than 100 miles since the downshifting happened and 3 months later I still do not have my truck back. I’m not thinking this was a coincidence all of this happened at the same time.
I was pulling a travel trailer up a grade at 55 MPH when my 2012 F150 shifted unexpectedly to 1st gear. The truck and trailer slammed down and fortunately I was pulling not having the trailer push me, otherwise I might have lost control with my wife and grandkids in the cab. I notified the Ford dealership in Moses Lake, Washington. They just told me to watch and see if it happens again. Last week I received a notification from the Ford dealership in Moses Lake, I have been down in Arizona for two years and have had my F150 serviced by San Tan Ford since the move. I have received notification from either San Tan Ford or Ford Motor. I called San Tan Ford yesterday and they refused to give me an appointment to fix the recall. They advised to drop it off and they could probably fix it in 4 hours. We need a class action suit against Ford Motor Company for putting my family at risk and not addressing this “known” issue for over six years!
I’m in. We are having the same issue and no matter what you tell them the response is…I’m sorry but you’re out of warranty and so the cost if repair is on you…what is THAT!!!
I had the extended warranty from ford and they still refused the claim but after telling my transmission needed to be replaced at almost 6k they were nice enough to charge me an additional $1500 for the tear down of the transmission all out of pocket they even canceled my extended warranty
I to recently bought a 2011 f-150 with the 6R80 transmission, only 70,000 miles had the recall done with the reprogramming, was driving down the road this week and lo and behold it thru code and down shifting into 1st gear going rather fast, on the interstate this will be catastrophic resulting in loss of life and property. Having read these testimonies and for anyone to believe Fords lies about down shifting an engine going 70 miles an hour to low gear and not exploding the motor, transmission torque converter is nuts..Ford I advise you not to put american people lives at risk you may not like the outcome.
same problem. getting jerked around. they lie about previous repairs too
I just received a third recall notice in my 2013 F150. No loaner car is provided and I cannot afford to rent a car, huge inconvenience as well. I am scared to drive my truck. Is there another recourse for me?
I have a 2017 f150 that has power management issues shifting and makes clanking sounds, Wayne Akers Ford doesn’t do anything but avoid the problems.
