new-balance-shoesAs American-made products become more valued and consumers more aware of where products are made, many have asked: are New Balance Shoes ‘Made in the USA’?

California ‘Made in the USA’ Laws

Many Americans choose to buy products that they believe are made in the United States for several different reasons.

These include the belief that products with ‘Made in the USA’ or similar labels may be of higher quality, or support the United States economy, or even both.

These consumers may choose to buy products labeled ‘Made in the USA’ because they are becoming more aware of the way countless employees in factories across the globe are treated, and hope that buying products made in the United States will help prevent these unfair conditions.

It has become an attractive marketing scheme for companies to falsely label products as Made in the USA in order to win customers over and boost sales.

While federal law is not extremely strict about this issue, California law is much more so. California law strictly prohibits products from featuring ‘Made in the USA’ or similar labels if any single component is foreign-made rather than made in the USA.

Federal law, by contrast, simply requires that “virtually all” of its components must come from the United States itself for a product to hold the Made in the USA label.

According to federal law, parts of the assembly process can also take place elsewhere, as long as the final stage of assembly occurs in the United States This also contradicts California law, which requires all stages of assembly to be in the United States as well.

Certain manufacturers may be using the average consumer’s growing awareness of foreign manufacturing conditions and interest in the U.S. economy by deceptively labeling products with a ‘Made in the USA’ label to boost sales.

Indeed, products marketed as New Balance shoes ‘Made in the USA’ may not have been fully produced in the United States, despite the labeling.
