Teachers-Federal-CUCustomers of both banks and credit unions, including Teachers Federal Credit Union, can be charged high overdraft fees when the overdraw their accounts.

Some customers may be charged overdraft fees even if they have not voluntarily signed up for an overdraft protection program.

The term ‘overdraft protection’ can make such programs sound like a good or even essential aspect of banking. This is especially true when customers may not have all of the pertinent details regarding these programs.

While the law requires that banks and credit unions like Teachers Federal Credit Union allow customers to opt in or out of a financial institution’s overdraft protection programs, some financial institutions may have either chosen to sign customers up automatically or neglected to give them all of the information about their overdraft protection practices.

A credit union customer who overdraws their account from Teachers Federal Credit Union or another institution may be charged significant overdraft fees, sometimes without being informed that the fees would be so high.

Banks and credit unions across the United States bring in billions each year from overdraft fees alone, according to reports.

Teachers Federal Credit Union Overdraft Fee Practices

Financial institutions like Teachers Federal Credit Union may be misrepresenting the benefits of overdraft protection programs to their customers, or failing to explain the details of the program.

This can lead to customers paying more money in overdraft fees than they would have if they had been fully informed of overdraft fee practices.

While institutions like Teachers Federal Credit Union may claim that their overdraft fee practices are put in place to protect their customers, they may be misrepresenting the benefits of the program or even failing to adequately explain how their overdraft fees program works.

Overdraft fees are incurred in order to cover the transaction required to move money from another account when a customer overdraws.

According to some reports, financial institutions may be charging their customers extra overdraft fees through deceptive overdraft practices.

These practices include reordering transactions, or purposely processing transactions out of order so that customers are charged the highest number of overdraft fees possible.

Banks and credit unions can do this by deliberately processing transactions so that larger purchases are processed first, making each payment more likely to overdraw the account.

Much of the overdraft money banks and credit unions rake in yearly is taken from the customers who can least afford these fees. Customers who routinely have less money in their accounts are more likely to overdraw them, while customers who have a great deal of money in their accounts are unlikely to overdraw.

For poor Americans, being routinely hit with excessive overdraft fees can make already difficult financial situations even harder.

Some bank and credit union customers affected by overdraft fees and deceptive practices have begun filing lawsuits against financial institutions like Teachers Federal Credit Union.

If you have been subjected to unfair overdraft fee practices by Teachers Federal Credit Union or another financial institution, you may be able to join a class action overdraft fees lawsuit.
